HD DVD debacle costs Toshiba 1 billion dollar

If you're wondering what the consequences are for Toshiba in pulling the plug on HD DVD, then you should read on. The Japanese electronics giant that was the main backer of the HD DVD format is expected to book a nearly 1 billion dollar loss on its high definition DVD business.

The loss is caused by production line changes and other charge that would double the expected loss of the company.

When Toshiba announced its withdrawal from HD DVDs last month, it had HD DVD agreements with studios such as NBC Universal's Universal Pictures, Viacom's Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG, rumours are that the company paid big for these agreements.

CDanMight be interesting to compare this number to the actual amount of money that the BD group has lost thus far. I'd be surprised if it wasn't a lot more.

This is business. When the stakes are high you either get a pile of money or lose one. In any case, I'm not too worried about the well being of Toshiba.

CirclestrafeThat's relatively the same as Joe Average Citizen losing a 100 dollar bill. They've already recovered from the 'loss' I'm sure.
