HD DVD player set to break the $100 barrier

Toshiba's HD-A2 player is set to go on sale this Friday for $98.87 (~€69 ex. VAT), making it the first time either format has broken the $100 barrier.  It was not that long ago Wal-Mart became the one of the first retailers to announce Toshiba's entry-level HD DVD player for $198, which resulted in Circuit City and Amazon both pricing the HD-A2 at $197.99 on their respective online stores.

While Wal-Mart mentions that it will only be available at certain stores until its stock has exhausted, if it decides to continue HD DVD players for around this price, the Blu-ray format will certainly need to watch out.  At this price, the player is not far off the price of a decent HD upscaling player and a fraction of the cost of a PS3, let alone a Blu-ray disc player!

JugheadBest buy has it in-store for $99.99 as well. I just picked one up today plus 2 free HD-DVD's of your choice $35 or less. There is very limited stock though since they stock the A3 A30 and A35

This will be a huge boost for the HDDVD camp. This price will make many consumers consider buying HD instead of a standard DVD player. I hope Sony will dump prices too. A price war would be great devil

"I hope Sony will dump prices too. A price war would be great devil " Exactly why 2 formats are better than one!

Well you guys might be interested in this. Some pepole got even luckier than those who got the A2.
Best Buy's latest move may be one of the best yet for "devil customers." It was reported yesterday on DailyTech that Wal-Mart would have the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player on sale for $98.97 Friday morning. Best Buy followed suit by offering the HD-A2 online and in-store for $99.99. As one might imagine, Best Buy stores were quickly depleted of stock and BestBuy.com was hammered with excess orders. Although some orders were able to get through, an overwhelming majority of customers who purchased HD-A2s from BestBuy.com received backorder notices. Given that the HD-A2 is now discontinued, one would have expected that Best Buy would just cancel all of the orders and be done with it -- but you would be wrong. Best Buy instead is replacing all backordered HD-A2 players with the new third-generation HD-A3 which retails for $299.99.

Lucky me. I was going to wait for an indefinite period until buying an HD player, but when I saw the Toshiba for under $100 I jumped at the steal and picked one up Saturday morning -- just in the nick of time. Oh, and also got a coupon for 3 HD DVD flicks Buh-bye Sony...good riddance; HD DVD rocks!! cool
