HD DVD sales are sinking, but two studios are committed to succes

A top-end movie release on HD DVD in May will be from Warner. A special edition of 'Twister' will be released on HD DVD after being available on Blu-ray and DVD for three weeks.

News like this might affect the consumer's choice. Last week was a bad week for HD DVD after net sales constituted only 15% of high-definition disc sales. Sales have been around the 30-40% mark every week in 2007, so it seems that the consumer is forseeing trouble...

But two studios are committed to bring Toshiba its wished succes. Paramount and Universal will bring titles like 'The Jack Ryan Collection' and 'American Gangster', will this news bring sales numbers back to normal?

Electrox3dSales numbers back to normal means still being in last place right?

FidelCIt'll be difficult with so much bias from the media who try to "advise" consumers about the right decision. The studios are not helping either as ultimately they dont care whether the format of choice will be expensive for us to live with. All they want is as much control as possible over their content and our pocket. Blu has offered just that - an extra layer of DRM plus region coding plus networking with 2.0 profile. With networking they can now offer more crap for purchase such as extra footage, interviews, or mail orders, if I understand how it works. So basically its not enough for them to just sell a disc (for the third time after VHS), they choose to keep on milking. The same applies to hardware, since nobody knows how many profiles are ahead of us. What works for Toshiba now is the season. Boxing is long over and now people will like to compare before buying anything. I feel for many it will be no problem spending $200 on a good player just to get a taste if they already have a 1080 display. At such price the PS3 will not matter and when sales grow the studios may change their mind overnight. Its not over when Sony thinks otherwise and history confirms just that.

CDanThe biggest problem that Toshiba has is overcoming slanted and half-truth reporting like this. Some so-called news posters just can't resist an opportunity to bash HD-DVD.

shaolin007Lol, what 15% of nothing? HD Discs only account for a mere fraction of the total disc sells, ie good ole DVD. You guys are so Bluray this and HD DVD, that you don't even realize that these "next gen" formats have barely, and I mean barely, penetrated the market. Personally, I don't care who wins. I just want the consumer, me, to be in the up and up end of it.

@shaolin007 do you really think if HDDVD dies $ony will give a f*ck about the customers ? They already showed their respect, with nonworking PS2's, dying batteries, rootkits, DRM on musics and alike... good that you wish that all again. Big Grin I prefer a war which helps prices go down, and not a monopoly led by $ony itself... Frown regards, Stephen

Hypnosis4U2NV"And every day is like christmas now. I never regret that i went Blu-Ray only." Clueless statement.. Time will tell, but I can almost guarantee that if Sony wins the war, you will be searching all the forums for answers on fixing Blu-Ray problems.. Sony doesnt care about you and never will.. They will protect their property even if it means screwing you over.. Comments like that make me wonder if you actually shelled out $400 on a Blu-Ray standalone or are you just another PS3 fanboy that wants Blu-Ray to win because you have a player already..

shaolin007"do you really think if HDDVD dies $ony will give a f*ck about the customers ? " If you feel that way then don't buy Sony. It is as simple as that.

shaolin007To u_n_s97 I hear ya bud. I had a Sony TV that had the picture tube go out 4 months after I purchased it from Best Buy. fortunately, I bought the warranty which covered labor and parts and other for $100. The service guy that came said they usually put in these cheap picture tubes at factory and that the one that he is putting in is the real deal, 10years + usage. Still have the TV after 7 years. On another note, my next TV purchase will not be SONY. It will be Pioneer and probably their new plasma line. I am drooling over the 110FD. The reviews say it is the best TV out there. It is one of few that accepts a 1080p at 24fps input.
