With all the drama and action around the format war, it's easy to forget about a third high-definition format... New Media Enterprises (NME) announced two days ago that HD VMD players are shipping into the United States and will cost less than $200.
We could say that HD VMD is a bit late and that they need luck to get even close to Blu-ray. Only a few studio's have announced that they are backing HD VMD and that means a small amount of movie titles to be available.
You can easily buy the player because it costs only $200, but you should note that your favorite movies will not be available.
P.S. If the rest of the big studios dump hd-dvd then the choice btw Sony and the peoples format becomes even more obvious.

I have an AVCHD camcorder from Panasonic which makes it possible to produce home videos of up to 1 hour on a standard DVD. These can be played back on a normal blu ray player, but apparently also on this item which is only 1/2 the price of a blu ray player here in Denmark. Sounds interesting. Does any one know if it can play back such a disk? (I don't care so muck about movies).
