Today rumours came out that studios plan to release quality movies on HD VoD first before releasing on DVD and Blu-ray. This could be an important step since this will create a serious burden for Blu-ray and could be disastrous for the format's growth strategy. At ContentAgenda.com they're sure we will see this in the near future.
According to the website studios have filed a petition with the Federal Communications Commission. The studios say they want to ensure HD programming is only available to those that have digital outputs that carry anti-copying protection. If this is doable, and the studio's content is protected, they plan to release a Video on Demand version prior to a film's Blu-ray or DVD release.
Besides this the website couldn't give more information and was unsure about possible launch dates and pricing.
