HP digital audio hifi set with CD-R and 40 GB HD

Yahoo reports that HP will bring us a home digital music center that will cost about 1000$ and is able to write CD-R's, converts audio CD's to MP3 and can be connected to the internet.

The Digital Entertainment Center de100c costs about $1,000 and looks like a large VCR. It stores the equivalent of 750 compact discs on its built-in 40 gigabyte hard drive and plays Internet radio stations included on a list put together by partner RealNetworks Inc.

Through a built-in display or a menu on the television, the center can be programmed to rerecord music from CDs onto the hard drive, converted into the popular MP3 music file format.

The machine also will write CDs, but it lacks a DVD player. ''We are going to do one thing, and we are going to do it really well,'' Product Manager George Prokop said. ``The primary need is my music, anywhere. It is trapped on the PC today, and people want to move it to another room.''

Well sounds nice, but what if the CD is protected with an audio copy protection, then I cannot convert my CD's to MP3. Did HP forget about this ? Or will they join us in the fight against audio protections ?

I bought a doo-hicky a while back that can do all this, and tons more! I forgot what it's called, it's a lot cheaper and much more expandable.... oh yeah! It's called a computer! :g
Siemens Multitainer can do all that except write cd's (You can change the drive so you can as well), it has been on the market for years. It has a windowsbased platform, but is a standalone unit. Have one here, and i love it. Shows DVD on tv as well..
this is some stupid hardware. my computer can do all this. network a multimedia laptop with a pentium 166 to your main computer and you have mobile MP3
