HP plans to offer a 64GB SSD as a business laptop option

Despite the high price tags on Solid State Drives (SSDs), Hewlett-Packard plans to start offering the option of a 64GB SSD in all of its professional series laptops from next month going by this PC World report.  However, with this option being targeted at professionals, as expected, the upgrade option does not come cheap at around $1,000.

The main advantages with SSDs over traditional hard disks include longer runtime due to reduced power consumption, better shock resistance, no seek time due to no moving parts and noticeably reduced weight on ultra compact laptop models.

While the SSDs are still too expensive for most consumers, many executives may not think twice of the cost, especially those who can afford to fly business class regularly.  One thing to note also is that while SSDs may not offer much of a performance improvement for home or workgroup PCs for most usage, they would give significant improvement for those who need to have large roaming profiles which seriously affects the log on/off time or shared network content synchronised for offline use consisting of several thousand files.
