Hitachi to close its Australian consumer electronics unit

Hitachi announced that they are pulling out of the consumer elctronics and whitegoods market in Australia. This news was announced over the weekend and means that Hitachi will no longer produce flat-panel TVs and camcorders in Oz.

Hitachi claims that the Australian market is too small and competitive. This will mean that more brands will leave... Who will be next?

An acquaintance of mine who got canned from Hitachi U.S. last November told me they would be pulling out of the American market by the end of 2008. Rumour, perhaps, but given the fierce competition in the U.S., Hitachi don't look very strong.
