Since the introduction of the DVD camcorder, they have turned out to be a major success due to recorded discs being immediately ready to play in standard DVD players. Now with the Blu-ray disc format on the market, Hitachi aims to repeat the DVD camcorder's success, but with plans to introduce a Blu-ray disc camcorder and an AVCHD based camcorder to the US market in 2007.
Both camcorders will feature video capturing at up to 1080i. Panasonic and Sony developed the AVCHD specification to allow 1080i HD recording capabilities on camcorders before Blu-ray technology could be downsized to the point for handheld recording equipment. It is unclear at this time what medium Hitachi will be using on its AVCHD based camcorder for storing footage. At this time, Sony is the only manufacturer currently offering AVCHD camcorders.

The AVCHD specification was developed by Panasonic and Sony as a means to bring 1080i HD recording to market quickly before Blu -ray technology could be adequately downsized for consumer camcorders. AVCHD video can be recorded onto standard 3-inch DVD discs and played back on Panasonic and Sony Blu -ray disc players and Sony's forthcoming Playstation 3. Other companies, such as Samsung, Pioneer and Sharp, have announced support for the format as well. |
What would be nice would be to implement the AVCHD on Blu-ray based camcorders, which would potentially give several hours of video footage on a single 8cm Blu-ray disc. For example, Sony's AVCHD DVD camcorder can fit ~20 minutes of standard play HD footage on a 1.4GB 8cm DVD, but with TDK announcing 16.5GB capacity on an 8cm Blu-ray disc, this would increase the recording time to about 4 hours at standard play.
