LCD transition to 16:9 aspect ratio definite

According to DisplaySearch the LCD panel industry is moving towards a transition that's unstoppable. DisplaySearch believes that by 2010 the widescreen format will have 90% of the market of the notebook panel market and 67% of the monitor panel market. This means that a 16:9 aspect ratio will be largely adopted and mainstream.

"In the near future, panel makers will take necessary phase-out tactics on existing 16:10 LCD panels in order to drive the market to 16:9 panels. Panel makers did it for square panels, and they know how to do it again," said DisplaySearch's David Hsieh, vice president for the Greater China market. Hsieh told DigiTimes that marketers and product planners should plan this transition to ensure a smooth roll-out over the next four years.

It's expected that IT professionals will be unenthusiastic and consumers confused since they will face a change shortly after managing the transition to 16:10 widescreen.

The 16:9 aspect ratio will mean production efficiency so a roll out is unstoppable and expected, says DisplaySearch.

I do not miss my 21" IBM 4:3 Monitor at all. My 22" WS is totally awesome at 1680x1050. Time to move to newer 1920x1080 soon Smilie

Well lets hope they start making more models with real 8-bit true color panels and none of these BS cheap 6-bit per component TN panels that fake true color by using dithering techniques. Which ones do that ? Pretty much every 22" LCD panel on the market (under $500 anyway....) and some 20" and 24" panels.

What was the point of 16:10 anyway?

DukeNukemThat's one of the reasons why I like my Samsung 204B so much. It's true colour - 16.7 Million.

16:10 was chosen so that you can show two A4 portrait pages side by side for desktop publishing. 16:9 won't allow that. Still, it was a silly reason to start 16:10 in the first place, and should have just stuck with 16:9. Trying to play my xbox 360 on a 16:10 is a pain as its slightly stretched, since Microsoft won't make a driver for 16:10 aspect ratio.
