The GSA-4040B was designed from the ground up to read and write DVD's and that's what it does best. While drives with 8x DVD writing speeds have started to ship, the LG's 4x DVD+R and DVD-R writing speeds should fill the needs of most. As it is, the drive had no problems burning 4GB of data in less than 14 minutes. The GSA-4040B also performed fairly well with DVD-RW and DVD-RAM media, but was no match for the Sony and its 4x DVD+RW writing speeds. We weren't able to verify this in our tests, but a number of people have reported compatibility problems with some 4x DVD-R media. Just keep this in mind if you purchase this drive. LG's new drive also performed pretty well in our DVD read tests. It was able to read single layer data DVD's at 12x and video DVD's at 8x. The GSA-4040B also reached a maximum transfer speed of 8x with DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW media. While this doesn't sound fast, it's actually better than what most drives can do. Of course, LG's new drive also features some of the fastest DVD-RAM read speeds around; that is, if you consider a maximum read speed of 3x to be fast. |
Although you would expect the LG drive to be expensive because it supports so many recording formats, it's actually rather cheap as it can be bought online for around US$ 142. Overall the LG GSA-4040B Super-Multi gets a 9/10 score from CDRLabs.com. If you're interested in reading mode, check out the complete review here.
