LG announces 12x DVD burner GSA-4120B

Currently shipping their latest 8x DVD burner, LG Electronics have announced their new DVD burner which is expected for CeBIT 2004. As with their previous drives, this new drive will also support DVD-RAM.

The "GSA-4120B" will be able to write all common DVD formats like DVD+R(W), DVD-R(W) and DVD-RAM and of course CD-R(W) as well.

12x will only be achieved with DVD+R media whereas DVD-R will be limited to 8x while DVD+/-RW will only be written with 4x. DVD-RAM will still be written with 3x (because of forced verify only 1.5x)

There is no information yet about the ability to write DVD9, availability or pricing.

With 12x drives available, drives that only support 4x will probably dissapear in the near future. Hopefully discs written at such high speeds do not have a too high error rate.

Feel free to discuss this drive in our Recording Hardware Forum.

prolly less... u get ~9 min @8x speed. But I wonder about the PI/PO error rates. On the brighter side - cheaper 4x media and cheaper DVD drives - horayyyyyy! ;)

Writing DVDs faster than you can read most of them - that is a weird one!
You're quite right about that. Most DVD-ROM drives can only read DVD+/-R's at 6x and the maximum I've heard of is 8x. I wonder how fast can this drive read its own recorded DVD's back at. :p

Only certain DVD-ROM drives will read DVD+RW's at 16x, but require the DVD-ROM bitsetting to be set. The DVD-ROM bitsetting trick does not work on DVD+R however in fooling the drive to read at full speed.
Question is, will 12x media be available when this thing comes out?
My Lite-On 166S reads DVD+R with DVD-ROM book type @16x (provided that I use good media) so that should work for other drives too.
Some firmware patched Toshiba DVD-ROMs can read DVD±R/RW @16x too.
