LG shows 12x DVD-RAM writer at CES

In LG's booth at CES you will among other things find the company's new SuperMulti DVD burner, the GSA-H10N. The drive's most interesting feature is the 12x DVD-RAM write speed but it supports all other DVD formats at market-leading speeds as well. LG also plans to launch an external 'one touch AV capture" SuperMulti drive called GSA-5169D. No information about any Blu-ray Disc drives or HD DVD drives for PCs are given in the press releases but LG plans to ship a stand-alone BD player called BD199 in the second quarter.

LG GSA-H10N

A preferred format for professionals and tech-savvy users, DVD-RAM is known for its reliability and ease of use, but read and write speeds have lagged behind many of the other formats '“ until now.

A major addition to LG's Super-Multi line of drives is the GSA-H10N, one of the world's first optical storage drives that can write DVD-RAM at a 12x speed. The Super-Multi GSA-H10N is designed for anyone with storage needs where consistency and the ability to re-write data and video is a must. Whether to back-up MP3s, videos, digital pictures or any large files, this drive can handle it all at speeds only a few have ever experienced. In addition to the 12x DVD-RAM write speed, this unit features write speeds of 16x for both DVD+R and DVD-R, write speeds of DVD+RW to 8x, DVD-RW to 6x, DVD+R DL at 10x and DVD-R DL at 8x.

In today's world, digital media is thriving and hard drive space is at a premium as consumers fill their computers with photos, music and videos and demand convenient products to support new pastimes. LG's External GSA-5169D Super-Multi drive '“ a one touch AV capture device offering users the convenience of Super-Multi compatibility and reliability plus audio video capturing '“ addresses these needs.

With a simple press of a button, the GSA-5169D will capture and transfer data, images and video directly from a digital camera, DVD-video player, camcorder '“ even from television '“ to a CD or DVD.

LG BD199

TV broadcasting is going digital. Demand for high-definition TVs is exploding. And consumers increasingly expect greater realism and better image quality in visual entertainment. LG's Blu-ray Disc (BD) Player (BD199) delivers that and much more, incorporating the best features of today's high-definition (HD) product and adding new capabilities to greatly enhance functionality. LG's BD Player marks a new standard for next-generation optical systems that delivers brilliant, high-definition performance.

The product plays Blu-ray discs; the new format of blue-violet laser BD-ROM discs for the ultimate in high-definition video performance. Blu-ray discs can store 1080p resolution video showing vivid detail, exactly matching the new HDTV screens that have 1080p horizontal resolution. The LG BD Player also offers seamless playback of the highest video quality discs as well as Blu-ray's advanced features, such as easy AV navigation and interactive functions. Planned for second-quarter 2006, its hi-tech-chic design complements the technology within the unit.

Wouldnt hold my breath for this, virtually impossible to find even 5x media on the street here (in UK) and not much easier to find a decent retailer online with it. cry Think it will be 2007 before 12x reaches the UK (or europe). Frown

We over here really only got 2x ram - 3x is rare and RAM costs .... ~20 times more than DVD+/-R and about 7 times more than DVD+/-RW .... in fact it costs more than hard disks per gigabyte for a 2x/3x disc!
