'Laptop Blu-ray drives will be most popular'

Digitimes reports that while the global demand for PC Blu-ray drives has not really taken off, it is expected that notebook drives will be responsible for growth in Blu-ray usage. The site has spoken with the general manager of the PLDS who also explained that the reason is that desktop PCs are much cheaper and hence the Blu-ray drive would be a bigger part of the costs.

Notebooks retail for a higher price which makes that Blu-ray drives account for a relative lower part of the total costs of a notebook, while a Blu-ray drive in a desktop PC almost doubles the price of the PC.

Based on orders placed by international PC vendors, it is expected that about 10-15% of the notebooksshipped in 2008 will have a Blu-ray drive. According to forecasts of Techno Systems Research (TSR) the global shipment of all optical disc drives in 2008 will be about 318 million units, but only 6 million (1.9%) will be Blu-ray drives.

Blu-turd drives are only offered on higher-end notebooks. The one's crippled with Vista Business and 1GB RAM. Stick Out Tongue

Laptops are more expensive than desktops because most of the individual components are more expensive. Why would Blu-Gay (sorry, couldn't resist jumping on that bandwagon) drives have a smaller price gap between desktop and laptop versions than every optical format that came before it?

Optical drives seem to be less and less popular. If the ultramobile PC market is as popular as expected, then most laptops this year will be shipped without optical drives. No Blu-rape for me.
