Lite-On 40/12/48 on sale in Japan...

xize used our newssubmit to tell us that Lite-On has also released their 40x writer on the Japanese market:

Suddenly it hit the market with the same pricing as Plextor's 40x drive: 19800 Japanese yen (about U$150-165)...

You can find the technical details of the new Lite-On drive here.

(cackles), but can they ever get any faster? 40x drives burn a disk in 1 minute 40 or so...

1:40 minutes? Nope don't think so... 40x writers are just a few seconds faster than 32x writers (which need about 3:50 minutes to write 700MB). The differences are even smaller when writing 650MB discs... This is because these writers use Zone-Constant Linear Velocity (Z-CLV) to write discs: the disc is devided into 3 or 4 area's, e.g: 20x/24x/32x/40x so the average writing speed is far below 40x. The Yamaha writers use a different method and to my knowledge they're the fastest.
