Lite-On is making available
today several new products for the DVD recording enthusiasts. The following
hardware items will be available today on the domestic market through their
Taiwanese sales agent, Gish International.
|
The
products are an 8x DVD Dual DL (single-sided double-layer disc) burner and
a 12x DVD Dual burner.
According to Gish chairman Garry Chen, a
few local makers already claim to offer 8x DVD+RW DL burner models, but
Lite-ON IT's 8x DVD Dual DL is also compatible with the '“RW format, and
will sell at prices of US$ 229-239 per burner. Lite-On IT also recently
began selling the 12x DVD Dual burners in Japan, Chen
indicated.
In addition to the two DVD burner models,
Lite-ON IT also launched a new DVD recorder model equipped with a USB2.0
slot for direct connection with digital cameras and DVs (digital video
camcorders), Chen
said. |

Two questions... Is the media available yet?.. and now much is it?.
Probobly good idea to let the first couple of iterations of these drives hit the market before purchasing... I'm sure there will be tons of patches, fixes and hardware revisions in the upcoming months... But worth keeping an eye out and watch
I agree with Slyder2, wait until the 16x/8x DL (16x for first layer burning, 8x for the second layer burning) drives come out first. By then Liteon should have their drives ironed out, as I understand they have a lot of unhappy people with some of their earlier DVD writers.
Saruman: You may have a long wait I'm afraid. Although Philips initial indicated that the DL writers would have different write speeds for DL when recording each layer (e.g. 8x for first layer, 2.4x for second) this NOW doesn't appear to be so.
Benq has stated 4x DL burners for the Autumn and 6x-10x for 2005. I've got a feeling too that the "6x-10x" could actually be a variable burn speed from 6 to 10x, as opposed to a 6x DL burner then later a 10x DL burner. However, that's just a theory and we're unlikely to know until much nearer the time.
FreqNasty: I think you may find that LiteOn's statement actually means it's a standard 8x dual format burner (+ & -) together with + DL support. I don't think it means the drive will support both + DL and - DL since Pioneer has previously stated that the - DL format won't be ratified until around the Autumn.
