Memorex announces DVD+RW/+R super combo drive

Memorex announced today that they have partnered with Ricoh to deliver a high speed seven-in-one drive. It functions as a DVD/CD player but supports DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-ROM, CD-RW, CD-R and CD-ROM

The Memorex DVD+RW/+R Super Combo Drive lets users record up to 4.7 gigabytes of video, data, photo or audio files in less than 30 minutes on DVD+R and rewritable DVD+RW media. The drive also writes to CD-R and high-speed CD-RW media. The DVD+RW/+R format allows changes and additions to DVD+RW video discs created by users without rewriting the entire disc, especially helpful for editing home movies.

"With mass confusion regarding the different optical media technologies on the market, consumers deserve a complete drive solution," said Michael Golacinski, president and COO of Memorex. "Our new DVD+RW/+R drive represents the synergy between Ricoh as a premier developer of 'plus' technology, our expanding drive business, and our industry-leading blank media. Working with Ricoh to deliver an internal drive that is compatible with the new DVD 'plus' technology, as well as other widely used CD formats, is a great milestone for both of our companies and the industry as a whole."

To perfect DVD and CD writing, Ricoh has created two technologies that are both embedded within the Memorex DVD+RW/+R Super Combo Drive. Ricoh's Lossless Linking and JustLink® technologies prevent "buffer underrun errors" that occur with DVD and CD-R/RW writing, respectively.

The drive includes Ahead Nero 5.5.8.5, Cyberlink's PowerDVD and some other utils. It is already available now at a (suggested) retail price of $379.99. Read the complete press release here.

DoMiN8ToRAnother DVD+R(W) drive. Also our poll (left below, only on the mainpage - where the news listed) is not clear what is currently better, DVD-R(W) or DVD+R(W)...

Especially here, where most people are informed consumers about disc burning, a poll won't necessarily reveal which format will win with the mass market. On one hand you have DVD-R(W) that has the most compatibility with all drives old and new and is also the format of choice for many people because of its compatibility with gaming systems for backups. On the other hand you have DVD+R(W), which because of it's technical specifications has many advantages over DVD-R(W), but isn't compatible with many older players, although it is seeing a big PUSH from most of the major players in the optical drive business. In the past, as was shown with Beta vs. VHS, the technically superior format does not always win, but with all the support + has it will be tough to beat. A large disadvantage Beta had was that Sony was the only company really pushing it, but + has a lot of major manufacturers as well as retailers (BestBuy only sells + recording drives) on its side. Again, that won't necessarily win the war, but it's something to think about. Of course, something you have to wonder... Does this partially have to do with piracy issues? Maybe. As much as I'd like - to stick around for its compatibility, I'm wondering how long it will really be a choice considering the push. The more consumers have one particular thing shoved in their faces the more likely they are to go with it. Just look what happened with the browser wars.

From what I've read when it comes time and it's coming soon.I'll be in the "+" camp. It's just a shame they all can't get on the same page.Imagine if we had 2 CD formats!!! :7

Del_Usion: That's not true. DVD+R/RW has at least as high compability as DVD-R/RW and works fine on Xbox and PS2. Look at http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#4.3.1 to get more info about compability.

DVD+R: 2.4xSpeed (thats Datarate of 21.6x compared to 1xCD) DVD-R: 2xSpeed DVD+RW: 2.4xSpeed DVD-RW: 1xSpeed Formatting of DVD-RW: 1 hour Formatting of DVD+RW: 36 seconds Except for Pioneer all DVD-R drives don't burn DVD-RW, only DVD-Ram. I burned DVD+RW, put it into Toshiba DVD-ROM-Reader SD-M1612: Works perfectly.

btw, ALL DVD+R-drives are manufactured by Ricoh, no matter whether sold as Ricoh, Philips, HP, Memorex or whatsoever! They're ALL relabeled! :9 But not all ship newest firmware. That's why I got a Ricoh - they do.

Nope I don't believe you cause according to all sources I've found they have about the same compability or even a little better compability for dvd+rw. "...the overall compatibility of DVD-RW and DVD+RW is very similar, and probably within the margin of error of the test." http://www.infoxpress.com/reviewtracker/reprints.asp?page_id=1344 and he has probably not tested the compability bitsetting utils that exist to dvd+rw recorders http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/bitsettings.html "DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with many newer DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players(very roughly about 65% of all players). DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with many newer DVD-ROM drives and many DVD-Video players(very roughly about 70% of all players)." http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvd.htm "...DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs work in around 65%" http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#4.3.1
