Microsoft and Intel to back HD-DVD format

YaZ, GristyMcFisty and Siswell used our news submit to tell us that the HD-DVD format received support from two big players in the technology industry. Both Microsoft and Intel have announced they will support the HD-DVD format. According to an article on Reuters both companies are supporting HD-DVD because they think it's the format that has the biggest chance of making the the multi billion market the new format is expected to be to take off. Besides the financial reason they also have technical reasons that support their choice.

Intel and Microsoft said they also chose to back HD DVD because of its "hybrid disc" technology, which allows users to view current-generation DVDs on HD DVD discs imprinted with both formats. They also said that HD DVDs would be cheaper to produce, resulting in lower prices for consumers.

Support from these two big technology companies must be a blow for the Blu-ray format. However this format still has the support of Sony what will use the format in its Playstation (but Microsoft might pick HD-DVD for its Xbox) and support of several big movie companies. Could Microsoft going for the HD-DVD format have something to do with its competition with Apple and the Playstion?
