More companies join talks for unified Blu-ray format

Looks like it's becoming more urgent to settle this argument over how to introduce the next generation of optical storage. The consumer is more than savvy these days and will not throw money away like they did in the Betamax debacle.

Each of the Blu-ray camps has already admitted for some time that a single format is best for consumers, but they are also businesses and need to do what is best for them to survive. So now other companies have joined in on the task of settling this dispute between Toshiba and Sony, at least according to Reuters "industry sources". Can this help in reaching an agreement, or will it delay the outcome even more?

Other key companies involved in the format war, including Matsushita's Panasonic and Netherlands-based Philips are also studying ways to end the three-year stand-off that is threatening to stifle the industry's growth.

But sources close to the electronics companies said it was still early days, and that the discussions would take a long time, while adding that a positive outcome was not guaranteed.

"Discussions are taking place, but it's very complex, both in terms of technology but also because so many companies have a stake in this," one source told Reuters.

The talks might be in early stages, but the technology needs to get moving one way or the other, but not both, or possibly a lot of money goes down the drain from development costs. Read the whole story over at Reuters.

One part of me says I want a price war with competing formats & consumer confusion galore. But I guess that's exactly what they don't want. I just hope the talks end up fruitful for the consumer.
