In the early days of Fasttrack peer-to-peer software, Morpheus, Grokster and Kazaa all ran on the same network. Then when a network issue occurred which prevented users from connecting, Morpheus backed off from Fasttrack and moved to the Gnutella peer-to-peer network protocol. They have remained with Gnutella and their own NEOnet network up until recently. Now Morpheus 4 adds direct connectivity support with file sharing to other peer-to-peer protocols including Fasttrack again (as used by Kazaa and Morpheus), iMesh, eDonkey, Overnet and G2. They are the first major commercial P2P Company with multi-network protocol capabilities and their software can also search across the networks all in one go also.
Their new software also provides Voice-over-IP (VoIP) technology to allow its users to make online voice calls to other users with Morpheus 4 for a flat monthly rate of $ 14.95. Finally their new release claims to have eliminated its spyware and also offers privacy and antivirus options. According to CNet downloads, their new release still contains bundled Ad-displaying third-party applications although these can be uninstalled without deactivating Morpheus.

Morpheus 4 provides direct connectivity to users of other peer-to-peer clients including Kazaa, iMesh, eDonkey, Overnet, Grokster, Gnutella, LimeWire and G2, StreamCast said. The software is available for downloading at no cost. The release marks the first time that a major commercial company has offered multinetwork capabilities, and by offering universal peer-to-peer searching, StreamCast could get a leg up on rival networks. A handful of programs that lack Morpheus' clout had begun offering similar capabilities earlier. Read the full article here. |
When it comes to finding difficult to find content, running and searching through multiple P2P applications can become a headache. It looks like Morpheus 4 aims to solve this by adding the most popular P2P protocols into one application. It is not clear if this software can download using multiple sources across the networks, for example having part of a file downloading from the Fasttrack network and the other part downloading from Gnutella at the same time.
The only thing their network lacks is the security features of the more secure file sharing networks such as encryption and proxy based redirection. At least it is nice to see that Morpheus has joined the popular Fasttrack network again without forcing the additional ad-ware products to remain installed in order for their application to function.
