Napster sucks, IRC rulez...

Forget Napster; IRC's the Place ============================== Napster may be the focus of venom and legal briefs by the recording industry, but it still pales in comparison to Internet Relay Chat for MP3 junkies. When it comes down to massive collections and diversity of choices, DALnet (http://www.dal.net) is MP3 heaven.

DALnet is the third-largest real-time chat network behind EFNet and UnderNet. Like the competitors, it has thousands of channels of various discussions, and only a few of them are for illegal activities. But because it's a more secure and stable network than EFNet and Undernet, it has become a popular place for MP3 trading channels. At any given time, more than 100 channels can be found on DALnet, all for trading MP3s.

There are some major differences between IRC and Napster, the popular utility for swapping MP3 files. IRC is a general chat network with channels that range from file-sharing to the sexually explicit. MP3 accounts for around one percent of the channels on DALnet.

IRC chat clients such as mIRC have a built-in mechanism for sending and receiving files but are far more versatile and stable than the Napster client. For starters, Napster is getting banned everywhere, but IRC isn't. Also, Napster is buggy. There are times when you can't connect to the network and searches are limited to 100 results, even if you tell it to give you more.

That's why IRC is a better choice for MP3s. Even though there are dozens of channels, they all use the same method for finding files, thanks to a script called SPR Jukebox. This script, which works with mIRC, uses the same search command (@locator) to find MP3s from anyone who's offering them.

When you make a search request, the people offering automatically respond with a private message showing what they have. Or you may see a request go by in the main channel. Either way, you send a trigger message and the file name to the channel and the file is either sent your way, or you go into a queue. It'll take five minutes of watching the activity in the channel to figure it out.

So does DALnet have the goods? Indeed it does. In the course of one evening I found all of the artists that my colleague, Christopher Jones, couldn't find on Napster. It took a little while, but Hé¼sker Dé¼ and The Replacements did eventually turn up. Want jazz? Check out #mp3_jazz. One person's 4.5GB collection featured Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Maynard Ferguson, and even Rahssan Roland Kirk.

Among the channels are specialized ones, like #MP3^Oldies_But_Goodies (oldies), #mp3_death (death metal), #mp3-classic-rock and #countrymp3. The biggest channel is #cablemp3, with more than 300 people during evening hours and 20 people offering their collections, each averaging around 1,500 files. The selection is MTV-like, offering the day's most popular bands. Like many channels, #cablemp3 has its own home page.

Easily the biggest collection online belonged to one woman who has 23,000 files totaling a staggering 149GB. This wasn't a onesy-twosy collection, this was whole albums. Lucky for her the Recording Industry Artists of America isn't going after the individual MP3 trader.

The channels #mp3 and #mp3z are right behind #cablemp3 with around 200 users, followed by #mp3_metal with more than 100. Don't tell this bunch heavy metal is dead, and whatever you do, don't request Korn or Limp Bizkit or you'll be out of the channel head-first and not allowed back in.

So what else was there? Well, being an old goat, I searched for the bands I grew up listening to, and there they were: April Wine, Foghat, Foreigner (far too many people only had I Want to Know What Love Is), Blue Oyster Cult, even Blackfoot. Plenty of Yardbirds, too. Obscure metal from the '80s? A mixed bag. Diamond Head and Saxon came up, but a search for Riot only yielded Atari Teenage Riot and Quiet Riot.

A new trend on the channels is trading music videos, and why not? It's not like MTV plays music any more. The videos are big, 40-50MB in many cases. They are either in MPEG1 or AVI format, and some looked like they were taken from a tape, not the television. Others were clearly from TV, such as AC/DC's recent appearance on Saturday Night Live.

The RIAA knows full well what's happening on DALnet, but lucky for the traders there, it has bigger fish to fry. "There are thousands of areas out there, and it's a resource issue," said Frank Creighton, senior vice president and director of anti-piracy for the RIAA. "I have limited resource capability, so we have to focus our efforts on more egregious areas."

But make no mistake about it, the RIAA is monitoring the channels and is sending cease-and-desist letters to people it identifies as regular traders, and it will go after people who ignore the letter. "If we get to the point where we reach out to them and the facts of the case are on our side, we won't send a letter demanding action unless we are prepared to follow up with civil action," Creighton said. "We are not a paper tiger. They've been put on notice to stop the activity. If they don't we're prepared to go further."

DALnet's CEO David Kopstain said it's difficult to censor, and he doesn't have the staff to monitor the network for illegal content, but that doesn't mean he condones it. "Do I agree with the trading of pirated software or child pornography on our network? No," he said. "Do we work freely with law enforcement agencies that are tracking these people down on our network? Yes."

I still think Napster does a pretty good job, and prefer using it to download music

Well, I liked napster and gnutella, but when reading this, I think I'm going to try mIrc. Is it really that great?
By Unknown, Tue 28 Mar 2000 18:32
Ah, there may be a couple of years for Wired to discover hotline...
Irc is a place for nerds playing with scripts and stupid bots. Even if you have the best will in the world, you can't miss all those jerks, especially in dalnet... so let's stick with nice napster...

IRC place for nerds... well, you must one of the bigest idiots i found today. On IRC you can almost find EVERYONE doing EVERYTHING, but lets stick to the music. You might heard of something called "groups" like RNS, ATM, BPM, APC etc, no? Well they're the guys releasing ALL the GOOD releases, the pre-release albums, the promo releases and everything else, and where do they hang out? Napster, *wrong answer sound* guess again, yeah IRC ! On IRC you'll find thet most of theese groups are putting up ,or their curriers, XDCC bots offering their latest releases. And that's full albums with the real names, not the renamed ID edited MP3's you find on Napster. So all the serious ppl spend their time on IRC gettin the new (and old shit) and all the lame ass ppl, who doesn't know shit about internet uses crappy software like napster.
I don't have time to write any more right now.

IRC rullleeeeeeezzzz

just great, I spend to many hours on it (i think that of my own ) on my own, and get massive amouts of mp3's and others stuff thoigh IRC, so NE1 who says Napster is better then IRC even wont get a lill respect from me, only the real IRC groups who release decent mp3's, warez and so own I respect, they just rule, when you encounter 1 file of an album released by them, it has been gone hanging around on IRC for weeks already and the IDs are still original and not edited like : donwloaded by -=blabla=- visut us @ http://blabla

but the real ones from the groups, oh, an you first have to get in and get to know some ppl on IRC before the fun starts, and that you will only get when you donate too when you've done that, it's heaven just let your mirc open for a day and your HD will be to small to keep up with the files you're donwing, on the other hand, when you only encounter lame idiots on IRC it sukcs for you and you can't judge everybody on IRC for that then

Well, I just installed mIRC.

Can somebody give me some good channels? I already have #mp3 and #mp3z.

I don't understand one part of the story: That DALnet, is this some kind of collection of channels or so? or is it the server where you are on?

Anyway: I agree with redneck and vampire-x; My first look was very decent, and it DOES work great!
By Unknown, Tue 28 Mar 2000 23:53
oh...and can somebody explain me why I don't see any users in #warezcds ?

Okay, I know the original argument was about how much napster bit irc's ass, but leave Gnutella out of this, I'm sorry but irc might have a lot, but you can't get it all just when you want it, you have to hang out in some godforsaken channel while you wait in queue to get some movie or the like with the chances being that either the bot giving you the movie or you yourself are going to ping out right when it's finally your turn. Especially on Dalnet, that thing gets more unstable every day. So yes, I agree you can find a lot on irc, you can also find one hell of a lot on www.oth.net, and now Gnutella, so I use irc as last ditch effort.

crzayperfectdevil, depends of who you already known in IRC, when you know ppl with lots of warez who are at the source of it, they send it right away, they just kick some of their bot or ftp so you got a nice speed, but as i sais before, you have to known right persons

fore that other question bout dalnet collection of srvers and so,here it is:
DALnat is a network of servers connected over the world, when you log on onto one of the DALnet server you are able to speak to NE1 on all the other servers connected to DALnet, and reason for empty #warezcds = we do not stay at DALner but at IRCnet (an other IRC network), so the complete freaks are at IRCnet !! keep that in mind
By Unknown, Wed 29 Mar 2000 01:50
The point is that on irc you have to know which chan/op/bot/person, and even then you have to put up with stupid kids playing with scripts and takeovers, ops who ban for fun and the list goes on...
With napster, you don't have to worry about the possibility of meeting such idiocy.
If you like it another way, napster keeps interaction between humans to a minimum .

Glad I posted this news here... Great Discussion!

IRC seems like a good way to get loads of MP3's, but I hate this having to suck up to people part...sorry, I just wanna click and go...so napster, gnutella and cuteMX rule for me...napster has 58 servers I can search through and the search limit is actually 250 titles...it's not bad and it's getting better
By Unknown, Wed 29 Mar 2000 22:29
Man IRC sucks...Napster is way better. to make a request in IRC you have to have "pals" that will respond else you get ignored as a lamer. In Napster just do a search, choose the one that looks good and off you go. simple.

Let's end this up

you can use IRC and napster together you know

I use napster too, and hang out on IRC meanwhile, and I dont say napster sucks and IRC DOESNT suck either (Amigo, as I said first impresion counts, I almost never had any trouble with stupic kids trying takeovers and so, just secure you're channel and when it is know it is securde ppl will act normaly)
So, use it both, togethet with much other things too, Gnutella, ICQ, ...
