With the Xbox 360 supporting DivX since its recent update, it didn't take long for Sony to add this feature to its own PlayStation 3 console series with the launch of its latest firmware update v2.10, going by High-Def Digest. This firmware update also upgrades the console to a Profile 1.1 Blu-ray player, which includes picture-in-picture functionality. The first discs to use incorporate Profile 1.1 features are set to hit the market in January 2008.
This firmware update adds DivX and WMV video playback. Going by this DailyTech report, the DivX support will not play titles that are copy protected (infected with DRM), encoded using DivX 3.11 or where the files exceed 2GB in size. The update also adds a "Type 3" bitmap audio option, which aims to enhance audio playback. Finally it also adds a voice changing option to allow users to mask their voice when chatting over the PlayStation Network.
At this stage, it is actually getting quite difficult to find a DVD player that does not support some form of DivX playback, so it is about time that Sony has finally added this capability to its PlayStation 3 console. With Blu-ray's higher capacity of up to 50GB, one can easily fit a decent size collection on just a few discs.
