The war is over, Blu-ray won the fight, but movie availability is not yet so large as for standard DVDs. Even if some "old" titles are being published also in Blu-ray format, a lot of people with a large collection of standard DVD movies certainly don't want to buy again the same movie and trash DVDs.
So what are the alternatives to watch a standard DVD movie on a large screen? A media center PC is certainly a good way, because with the proper VGA card it is possible to watch movies on a large screen, but an upscaling capable standalone player is another good alternative.
The hardware used for the upscaling feature is different among the various models available in the market, each with different performance and resulting image quality. One of the best upscaling chips is the one installed in the OPPO DV-983H DVD Player.
The first feature noted in this player is the price: why should someone buy a standard DVD player with a price comparable or higher than a real Blu-ray one? That's simple: according to
the review published at Trusted Reviews, the upscaling capabilities of this player are better than a Blu-ray player (regarding a standard DVD disc, of course, because a Blu-ray movie has certainly a better quality when playied at full resolution).

Just wait! If Oppo comes out with their Blue Ray deck expect the quality to be second to none. If their standard top of the line DVD player is the best, then the Blue Ray player should be nothing less. I would wait for their Blue Ray player.
