Sony is still losing money on the Playstation 3, but less now than when it first came out.
The Build of Materials cost has more than halved over the past two years. The original 60GB PS3 set back Sony US$840 per unit, but eager for market share they sold them for US$599. Today, things aren’t as bad. The current 40GB PS3 model is costing Sony just US$400 a unit.
Several hardware changes have been made since then. Gone is the PS2 Emotion Engine as well as some other bits that weren’t deemed cost effective. Rambus has also helped tweak Sony's costs, as they’ve been heavily involved with the PS3's bus and memory architecture.
Despite all this, Sony has still managed to sucker convince 12.81 million people into buying one. However, they still have a long way to go before they can even think of breaking even.

yeah duke, nothing like unbias reporting eh?....not!
i mean, why put in your articule, "sony has managed to sucker/convince 12.81 million people in to buying one"?
i think you're just looking to antagonise people into arguments!!
@ steveo119
It's called humour. If you don't like my brand of humour then just follow the link to the original article. I never said I would do unbiased commentary. Look at my CDFreaks contract and you'll see. Oh, wait. I don't have one.
Think about it, if they didn't under sell those units, do you think people would of bought those units, in the number that they did, for $840!! I think it would of been a vastly different outcome with HD DVD if the PS3 were sold at what it was suppose to be. The consumers didn't make a choice, it was Sony pretty much "buying" their way into the market.

Ancient news:
http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/content/jan2008/gb2008018_681920.htm
By now the cost is well under $400.
The PS3 has outsold the 360 in all regions for the first half of 2008.
Once the PS3 hits $299 the Assbox 360 is pretty much dead (probably E3 2009, possibly this xmas).
The Wii-Did-I-Buy-This is going to take a huge drop in sales too because of its 2003 hardware and lame novelty controller.
The PS3 is easily the best console this gen, but will probably end up being the best console ever.

That's called an "investment". Dur!
Not, really a sharp crowd on this site, eh?

@ steveo119
To the educated readers on this site, who are my target audience, it is funny to poke fun at Sony. At any rate, I'd rather be a contestant on The Running Man than own a PS3. But hey, that's just me. That's my opinion. Feel free to state your opinion. That's what free speech is all about.

Funny, I can find a PS3 in stores but when it comes to a Nintendo Wii in my area, can't seem to find one those with its "novelty" controllers. Why do you think that is so?

The Wii is everybody's token game system.
"Look at me! I playing a Wii, aren't I kooky!!!"
It's a fad. The horrible games are proof.
In general, I don't really like Sony either... However, I gotta admit that the PS3 is very impressive, as a machine, in terms of price/performance. If you do your homework, you can use it as a gaming rig, a general-purpose PC, and a Blu-Ray/DVD player for about half the price of a rivaling desktop computer. This, of course, assumes you have a TV (which is fair, since a PC needs a monitor/TV).
Personally, I've always stuck with PC gaming, and have not had enough of a reason to get a PS3. But if you don't have any of the 3 things above (or are looking to upgrade), the price is definitely a good deal.... and you still get to punish Sony when you buy the console but avoid shelling out for their "content" .
Heh, this is kinda funny -- if massive of people buy the PS3 to use as a PC, both $ony and M$ would get nix-ed . This message was edited at: 27-06-2008 07:57

"Did you guys hear? Blu-ray won!"
I was at a friend's place last night. He just set up his new 52" LCD and asked me if he should get Blu-ray. I told him that the damn thing isn't even finalized yet and to wait for Toshiba's new super-sampling DVD player to come out. He said okay. True story.
Die, Blu-ray. Die !!!

"..wait for Toshiba's new super-sampling DVD player to come out.."
LOL, he probably uses those dial-up accelerators too, to give him "Hi-Speed" internet access.
Upscaling = Scam.
Upscaling is just a way to sucker cheap people into thinking they're getting HD. It's like Creative's Crystalizer crap that supposed to make mp3's sound like 24/96 studio recordings. It's pure crap. It makes your music sound completely wrong. You have to be stupid or poor to fall for that shit. Like HD-DVD supporters did.
How's your HD-DVD paperweight these days Duke?

This site should change its name to:

"Upscaling is just a way to sucker cheap people into thinking they're getting HD."
How about we wait and see what Toshiba has to offer first?
"How's your HD-DVD paperweight"
I was smart enough to put a padlock on my wallet until the HD wars were over. Now that Blu-ray has won, I've buried my wallet in the back yard. No soup for you, Sony.
@ bluray1

That would be awesome. Thanks for the idea. I'll mention it to the admin and we'll get back to you.

My initial take on your BLU-RAY Bias and Stupidity is Laughable. Are you having nightmares due to the success of BLU-RAY ? How can your comments be taken seriously, when you've blatantly indicated your hatred for anything SONY and BLU-RAY.
Confucius say "The best men are born wise. Next come those who grow wise by learning: then, learned, narrow minds. Narrow minds, without learning, are the lowest of the people"

"your BLU-RAY Bias and Stupidity is Laughable."

"Are you having nightmares due to the success of BLU-RAY ?"
Success? I never see anyone buying them when I go to the store. I don't know anyone who has a Blu-ray player. I don't know anyone who even knows anyone with a Blu-ray player. So, if by success you mean they're collecting dust, then yes, Blu-ray is a success.

All my relatives now exchange Blu-ray movies instead of DVDs at Xmas and birthdays. They all have PS3s, Wiis, and Xbox 360s too. So obviously you're wrong. Blu-ray is taking over. Who would be stupid enough to keep building a DVD library these days? I mean besides the redneck, unwashed, PC geeks who can't afford Blu-ray?

Well, look at that. When you're backed into a corner you turn to your base emotions for comfort. You can't even carry on an adult conversation without resorting to anger and name-calling. I do think you hit the nail on the head, though. Only rich people can afford Blu-ray.

I'm not rich but I can afford blu-ray. PS3 that is. $399.
But you need HDTV first. I got mind last year. One at a time folks, one at a time. HDTV first, HD channels or FREE over-the-air broadcast. Then Blu-ray. Then home theather. I own home theather since 8 years ago so I'm done.

DVD was once only for the wealthy as well. Even I once thought "VHS is good enough.", until I got a DVD player.
This is no different than the way Windows XP users bash Vista, which was the same way people bashed XP when it came out. You people are all whiners.
The Bottom Line:
If you want the best video quality, Blu-ray is it, period.
Does this mean you don't love me anymore?
definately a love hate relation, you've got there!!
u love micro$oft, he hates you!! lol!!
so i take it you're still p155ed that you bought the addon for your xbox360 and got caught short??
@bluray1
"This is no different than the way Windows XP users bash Vista, which was the same way people bashed XP when it came out. You people are all whiners."
Ohh, bluray1, man, you shouldn't have gone there. Obviously you love to make sweeping generalizations. I was indeed one of the late adopters of XP, and did not like it at first. Of course, I admit that my mild bashing at the time was pretty misguided, as I had not even tried XP, and was judging it on looks. When I finally switched over, I saw how vastly superior it was to 98 (and later found out that Win 2000 was really the one that made the vast improvements, without the lousy look).
Now, with Vista, I don't see significant improvements in the operating system itself. Sure, there are plenty of features and eye-candy, but its performance improvements are simply mediocre, at best. On top of that, all the extra crap that comes with slows it down. Quite simply, I don't need most of the "features" Vista comes with (I do have a legal copy, which I removed after a 1-day test-drive). Why should I slow down my system with stuff I don't need? Hell, most of the features have better implementations available for XP, for free.
So, really, my XP x64 does me just fine. And if I wanted lots of features and eye-candy even better than Vista's, I'd get Linux! This message was edited at: 28-06-2008 03:38

What I do find interesting with people in general is that when they have decided to buy a product, they will then attempt to justify / defend that decision until the bitter end.
It's a bit like buying a ticket to go and see a bad movie at the cinema. You come out thinking 'It wasn't that bad', then a few days later you cave in and admit to yourself it was a pile of junk !
Blu-ray isn't just for the 'rich' - as my PC cost much more than any blu-ray hardware, but I built it simply because it's better than a ps3, and will do much more than just play games (at low resolutions on the ps3 compared to a PC).
With the recent news of Sony losses on PS3, and now the news they are offering movie downloads (with only themselves currently signed up to offer their own movies), just in case their blu-ray plan doesn't work... I almost feel sorry for Sony (but not quite). How the mighty have fallen!
Shame, as without the DRM etc... and decent prices people would probably accept Blu-ray. Hi-def is just not something people care about - I mean let's face facts... how many HD ready TV's are out there that fully support 1080p ?
By SenorEd (guest),Saturday 28 June 2008 13:17
@Vic_M
What's wrong with DRM on Blu-ray, exactly? I mean for people who don't wear tinfoil hats.
I buy a movie.
I put it in the player.
I watch it.
I take it out.
Done.
At what point is DRM a problem?
Unless some poor, communist, lowlife wants to steal the movie because of some delusion of entitlement, I don't see a problem with DRM. In fact, anything to protect the artists is pro-consumer to me.
Toshiba, on the other hand, is by far one of the most anti-consumer companies out there. They are so cheap, I'm surprised they don't make you assemble their products yourself, just to save a few bucks.

Poking fun at Sony might be funny the first time you hear it and maybe even the 2nd time. Once you have heard it god knows how many times from the same people it starts to sound like they are preaching. If i want a preacher i will go to a church.
People who report the news should stick to the news and facts and save their preaching for some soap-box on some street corner and preach to folks who want to listen

Really? Is that why they have released new firmware for their HD DVD players? Granted, it may not matter since it is a dead technology, but it proves that comment to be unsubstantiated.
And I noticed that the most of the PRO Blu-Ray crowd is not even registered to the site and signed on as "Guests".. You guys should really take the time and register..
The ps3 didn't beat all other console in all regions in the first half of 08. They only just crawled past the 360 in May's numbers, all the other months the 360 beat it. 360 has a large head start in NA... it'll be interesting to see if sony can catch up before the next gen comes out.
The increase in ps3 sales might of been related to mgs4. I think the 360/ps3 will continue to be neck in neck, they'll both do price cuts, so that won't make of a diff.
Thanks for pointing out the obvious professor.. But if you weren't so busy playing video games in life, you would know how to form complete sentences..
