Panasonic 8x BD-R burner debuting September

Panasonic has just announced a new internal SATA Blu-ray Disc burner that hits 8x speed when writing to BD-R single layer and dual layer discs. The new unit, dubbed the LF-PB371JD, will launch in Japan on September 13th.

Maximum write speeds include 8x BD-R, 8x BD-R DL, 2x BD-RE, 5x DVD-RAM, 16x DVD+/-R, 8x DVD+/-R DL, 8x/6x DVD+RW/-RW, 48x CD-R and 24x CD-RW. The drive has an 8MB buffer and also supports 8x Blu-ray Disc read speeds.

The LF-PB371JD is able to achieve 8x write speeds with Panasonic 6x BD-R discs. Recording a full 25GB BD-R disc at 8x will take approximately 14 minutes, with a 50GB BD-R DL clocking in at about 28 minutes. It is unclear whether or not other BD-R media types will be supported at 8x. If you'd like to read the official Panasonic announcement, check it out here.

Wonder what price this will cost in U.S. dollars. Also the price of single layer B-R discs are still $20 a piece, I couldn't imagine what a double layer would cost.

It can only get cheaper by the year from here on out.

CPUSlayer worte: Also the price of single layer B-R discs are still $20 a piece, I couldn't imagine what a double layer would cost.

You need to get out more. Ritek 2x BD-R is $6 at rima.com. Frys.com is selling Panasonic 4x BD-R for $9.99 since many months ago. You can get cheaper rates from ebay!

Anyway, I doubt the price will go more than it used to be last year ($1000 for a 4x BD-R burner). The LG GBW-H20L 6x burner is $280 now. My guess, this Panasonic 8x burner will be hovering around $300-ish.

@blue - he saw that price and he didnt want to go out anymore!

$20 might be for the Sony branded BD-R's. Other brands are less. I think the player will be about US$300 at introduction.
