Parallel migration to blue-laser DVD urged
While most industries are always trying to the release their latest technologies to the public, so they can make money with it, the DVD technology producers will probably have to settle with their latest technology only available in Japan.
Again the US entertainment industry is trying to show off their powers and information has leaked that a Hollywood studio proposed that blue-laser-based (With capacity of 27 GB per side) high-definition DVD recorders will initially become available as VCR replacements only in the Japanese market.
At the DVD Forum's steering committee meeting in February, content owners '” Warner Bros. in particular '” lobbied for a new and more efficient compression algorithm that would allow a full-length movie to fit within the 8.5-Gbyte capacity of today's DVD-9 disk, rather than an immediate migration to blue-laser-based HD-DVD. But the studio proposal defines "a parallel migration path to the full blue-laser-based technology" that the studio expects to be required "for the recording of broadcast HDTV signals, as well as for distribution of prerecorded motion pictures with extra materials in the longer term." |

The fact is that Japan (and other nations such as the UK) are smaller, and have a smaller economy, a smaller set of demographics. This makes it easier for them to sell new technologys and rapidly establish new standards. With the US's enormous market, it is much more difficult to successfully introduce new products and technologies. It's a slower, more deliberate process. It's not necessarily about content-control, it's really just simple economics. I'm for improved technologies and free information just as much you and anyone else, but living here, we can't expect to necessarily get it as easily.
