Paramount to support both HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats

In the beginning of the year Warner, Universal and Paramount announced plans to release several titles in the HD DVD format before the year's end. The release date for HD DVD products has however been delayed and now one of the studios, Paramount, says it will no longer release HD titles exclusively in the HD DVD format but also in the Blu-ray Disc format:

"We have been intrigued by the broad support of Blu-ray, especially the key advantage of including Blu-Ray in PlayStation 3," Par home entertainment prexy Thomas Lesinski said in a statement. "After more detailed assessment and new data on cost, manufacturability and copy protection solutions, we have now made the decision to move ahead with the Blu-ray format."

On the Blu-ray side there are already Disney/Buena Vista, Sony Pictures, Fox, MGM and Lions Gate so Paramount's announcement is a major blow to the HD DVD camp as it leaves only Warner and Universal left of the major studios to release titles exclusively in the format. The question is if Warner and Universal really can continue to support only HD DVD now? If not then HD DVD is probably a dead format.

wow, hopefully this will help finaly put hd dvd down. The combination of most of the studios, the ps3 support out of the box, the only other decisive facter could be the porn industry. (yes, they will probably be key in the deciding factor if both formats make it to market). With all these stuidos in the Blu Ray camp, warner and universal need to realize, and not isolate fans of their flicks. They are going to get stuck in a corner if they dont make a reversal, or at least offer both formats.

DeadManI don't think the media format itself will be the deciding facor here as the hardware (Copy protection, system upgrades - including display -, costs etc)
