Philips lowers DVD royalities, brings specs of Blu-ray discs

Ze used our newssubmit to tell us that Medialine reports that Philips has lowered DVD royalities in order to to reward compliant licensees, and to also encourage companies that are not yet compliant to join the licensing scheme under more favorable conditions.

Philips last month announced a new incentive for replicators that press DVD-Video and DVD-ROM to sign up for licenses. Effective July 1, under the DVD license program administered by Philips on behalf of itself, Sony Corp. and Pioneer Corp., licensees will be charged a royalty of US$0.0375 per disc instead of US$0.05 per disc.

The lower rate is available only to licensees who are in full compliance with the conditions of their existing licensing agreements.

Besides that on the Philips website we can find that several companies have announced that they will start disclosing specifications for a next generation large capacity optical disc video recording format 'Blu-ray Disc" in June 2002.

The companies that would start disclosing specifications for the Blu-ray Disc format are: Hitachi, Ltd., LG Electronics Inc., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., PIONEER CORPORATION, Royal Philips Electronics, SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD., SHARP CORPORATION, Sony Corporation, and THOMSON multimedia. The nine companies will be called 'Blu-ray Disc Founders", and they will pursue a broad acceptance of the 'Blu-ray Disc" format.

The initial aim of the disclosure is to study specifications in time for the development and manufacturing of products based on the Blu-ray Disc format.
