Maxel send us a mail that reports that the french website called Inpact Hardware has a picture of currently worlds fastest burner that has been catched on camera, the TraxData 52x/32x/52x Uranus. We expect the drive to be using Lite-On internals and TraxData probably was the lucky owner of the scoop.
The drive writes at 52 speed, rewrites at 32 speed, reads data back at 52 speed and does DAE (Digital Audio Extraction) at 40 speed. It supports Mount Rainier has 2 MB buffer and buffer underrun technology.
The drive should be available in mid September and will cost according to the French reporter about 129 EURO.

Beware of those 100 CD-R packs that appear to be cheap. They write fine, but wait about a year and even without any scratches, I now get read errors Nero Scandisc reports 0% damaged on recently written CDs, 10% - 20% damage (drive has to spin down & up to read) on CD-Rs about 6 months old and a few with 20% - 50% damage and 5% unreadable (CRC errors) about one year old. The Tevion brand (common in ALDI here in Ireland) show less than 1% damage & fully readable when left for a year regardless of what speed they were written at.
I got a 32x Lite-on burner recently and has no problems so far.
who needs this? 52x means a cdr is burned in 2 min. I need 6 min. on my 12x. so what? only 2 mb buffer? I have 4, and even that is often not enough. so happy underruns. with the buffer underrun technology this drive will need an hour to burn a cdr, because it will get 100 underruns, and will have to resume all the time.
besides, it's again atapi crap, isn't it?
I am staying with my good old 12x scsi plextor and don't give a ... about this drive. it's intended for people who know nothing about computers. look at the picture - the number "52" is in red, but I can't see the words "the drive is atapi and has only 2 mbs buffer".
And I still believe that Lite-on technology is much inferior to Plextor.
I have an ATAPI IDE Drive with 2 meg buffer, and I have never burnt a bad CD with it. My computer is 3 and a half years old, I burn CD's all the time, and every CD I have every burnt still works.
So ATAPI must not be that bad.
WRFan if you have a 12x Scsi recorder with 4Mb of cache and it often ain't enough then you are the one who knows othing about computers. :P
If you have a nice HD you can bet you'll never have a underrun even when writing at 52x on a ATAPI drive.
By the way, Lite-on technology is way better than Plextor's at present time (not to mention way cheaper). Just look at Plextor 40x recorder.... It has major problems. I owned one, it sucked, returned it and got a Lite-on 40x and now i'm a happy camper

A 52x speed writer saves me only 3-4 minutes and probably sounds like an airport. At the moment, its not worth the upgrade. It would be good for first time buyers though. I'll stick to my 12x8x32 SCSI from Sony.
@cfao:
when burning audiocds at 12x, I often nearly get a buffer underrun inbetween tracks (after a track is burned, the burner stops for a second or two, and that's where the buffer is used-it goes down, then is filled again while the next track is burned. now imagine doing this at 52x speed. not even the best scsi harddisc will prevent buffer underruns. and if buffer underruns occur too often, the burning will take at least half an hour with burnproof. then my burner is faster, since, although I don't have a buffer underrun prevention, I do have fast scsi harddiscs and a burner with much buffer. so I bet I'll be ready with burning twenty minutes earlier with my drive than somebody with those crappy 32x-52x atapi drives with 2 mbs buffer.
my point is simply that this increase in speed is senseless. even if you don't get a buffer underrun, the gain is minimal: 2-3 min.
the plextor 40x is atapi. that's why it is crap, that's why you returned it. and those liteon drives are cheaper, because, surprise surprise, they are atapi, and atapi doesn't cost a thing, because it's worth nothing.
RWFan.
You should come to the 2001 century. You are way of. I have a LiteOn 40x patched to 48x. I burn a 80min audio cd in 2minutes and 34 seconds. No underruns ever.
@WRFan
I don't belive I've ever experienced the problem you describe (and I've been recording cd's for looong time, my first recorder was a Philips cdd 2600 (piece of crap btw)). Anyway, no offense but I really think you have no idea what you're talk about. I bet you never even tried a ATAPI recorder... I had a few SCSI recorders (my player is still a Ultraplex 40x) and a couple of ATAPI, and I never experienced anything better than this Liteon drives. Of course there are many crappy brands (wich I had a few as well :C) like samsung, LG, etc. Bottom line is that speed IS important and 52x drives will burn faster and better than your Plextor 12x (let's see if can burn the latest safedisc :4)!!!
The speed can be a prob for audio but not for data. And indeed, the gain is only circa 30 sec. But My plex12 atapi still does everything i want So atapi is not crap

By this time next year we'll all have moved on to DVD-RW's anyhow. The price is dropping and dropping. Already you can write DVD's at 2x (Although 2x branded DVD media is still expensive compared to 1x no-name media). Soon will be able to write at 4x, but think on that. It takes nearly and hour to write a 4.7 gigabyte DVD-R at 1x but only about 15 minutes for a 4x. That's 4.7GB of data in 15 minutes. Next year no doubt the costs will be even less and you'll be able to get 6x and 8x writers (4.7GB in 7-8 minutes!). You'll be able to store several DiVX movies per disc. Possibly be able to play them back in your MPEG4 compliant stand alone DVD player. DEFINITELY in your modded Xbox and be able to do backups of your OS install and store tons more MP3's etc.
DVD-RW's are the future.

WRFan :
1) When underrun protections goes in .. it doesn't resume ! Only It restarts writing where it left..with newer burn-proof technologies leaving almost 0 micron between the two points ( where it left and where it restarted writing ).
2) The way you burn your audio cd's ( the burner stops for a second or two between every audio tracks ) tells me you are still using crap software as Easy Cd Creator .. it drops writing every track.. not Nero Burning Rom.. ever heard about it WRFan ?
3) So you seem to be a great audiophile aren't you ? well well..how fast does your ultra fast SCSI recorder Extract Audio ? 10x ? 12 x? Evere tried a fast fast Lite On ATAPI recorder ?
4) Do you know that Lite-On has a feature called smart-burn.. in simple words..in its firmware it has a database of cdr's brands so that when you put a blank cd inside and choose a recording speed it will record it at the speed IT decides ( referring to its database ) in order top have a 100% error free cd ! This applies to audio cds too ! I burn my audio at 40x .. never had a problem.. by the way I use GOLD cdr's !
Bye :4
