Pioneer & NEC to showcase blue-laser DVD drives in December

In an aim to promote blue-laser DVD drives, both Pioneer and NEC will showcase their Blu-ray and HD DVD drives respectively at the annual IT Month fair in Taipei from December.

Due to an AACS copy protection licensing delay, the Blu-ray writers for exhibition will lack this until volume protection starts beginning next year.  HD DVD on the other hand will exhibit read-only drives and are expected to start volume production from December, followed by HD DVD writers at a later stage.  Thanks again to GristyMcFisty who submitted the following news via our news submit :

Pioneer High Fidelity Taiwan and NEC Taiwan will respectively showcase their Blu-ray Disc (BD) and HD-DVD burners and players at the annual IT Month fair beginning in December in Taipei.

The Pioneer BD burners to be exhibited do not have content protection due to a delay in licensing of the anti-piracy AACS (advanced access content system), Pioneer High Fidelity Taiwan indicated. Volume production of BD burners equipped with CCAS will begin next quarter, the company noted.

The HD-DVD players to be shown will have playback functions only with volume production to kick off in December, NEC Taiwan pointed out. The timing of the launch of HD-DVD burners will hinge on market conditions and the strategy adopted by the HD-DVD group, the company added.

If all PC based Blu-ray drives will be writers, chances are that this will help boost the popularity of Blu-ray when it comes to high capacity recording.  On the other hand, as HD DVD will initially start off as read-only drives, chances are that these will be much cheaper than the writers and would be better suited for those who only wish to play back high definition content, assuming consumers can easily get the content they want on HD DVD.
