Pioneer to start selling slim-type DVD-RW drives in second quarter

A while back we already reported that Pioneer would start selling DVD-dual drives (the DVR-A06). Today we can read on DigiTimes that Pioneer has also planned to sell DVD-Dual solution kits in August of this year and besides that, Pioneer will also launch their first slim-type (notebook) DVD-RW drives:

Japan-based Pioneer will start selling DVD-RW and DVD-Dual solution kits in August and expects to launch its first slim-type, notebook-use DVD-RW and DVD-Dual drives in the second half of this year, according to subsidiary Pioneer High Fidelity Taiwan.

The solution kits will include Pioneer's optical pick-up head (PUH) and controller chips from other companies like NEC. Consulting services and technical support will also be provided to help customers produce their own optical storage drives, the company said.

Pioneer has a monthly capacity of 400,000 recordable DVD drives, which is expected to grow to 600,000 by the end of June. It could double its capacity to 1.2 million units by year-end, as it will complete its second factory in Dongguan, (Guangdong Province) China in August, said Shannon Yu, general manager of Pioneer China Holding Cooperation.

According to the article, Pioneer's total recordable DVD drive shipments in 2003 are expected to reach four million units, compared to 2.2 million in 2002.
