Playstation 3 will display 1080p 16x9 ratio

Of course yesterday Sony came out swinging with news of it's upcoming Playstation 3 in response to the massive press of Microsofts awesome Xbox360. If you have an Internet connection and a browser, you would have to work hard to miss any of the news. One thing that catches ones eye is even though the Xbox is very powerful, the Playstation 3 has twice the computing power of the new Xbox 360.  Yet the National Ledger had a little information for those that are into HDTV like some CD Freaks are. It seems the PlayStation is capable of 1080p resolution in the 16x9 format. If we look at plasmas and even some rear projection sets, we can see that the 1080p sets are coming. While at CES this last January, we were able to take a gander at a few there. I must say that the difference between 480p that we enjoy now while watching a DVD on a progressive scan player and 1080p is impressive, giving the coveted "through the window" effect.

The PS3 will also display at 1080p in a 16:9 ratio. It will support two video outputs, meaning if you happen to have two HDTVs lying around, you can connect them together and have a combined 32:9 HDTV panoramic display.

The PS3 will use the Blu-ray disc format, capable of holding 50 gigabytes of information, which is about seven times the capacity of existing DVDs, as well as slots for additional memory cards, a detachable hard drive, Bluetooth wireless for up to seven wireless controllers and the console will also play CDs and DVDs. That means the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games can be played on the new system as well.

I am not into games that much and I don't have the guts to ask for a 1080p display after just springing for a 42" plasma. But, maybe I'll win the lottery in the next 9 months or something. The point is, those that have not taken the plunge already, you could get a PlayStation 3 use it for gaming and as a nice 1080p display to enjoy HD television and (hopefully) some content next year!

"capable of 1080p resolution in the 16x9 format" 1080p is by definition 16x9. So it's like you're saying the same thing twice.

I don't know. I'd be surprised that Sony released their new PS3 console in the same year they introduced the PSP. Sort of takes the wind out of the PSP for the busy X-mas shopping season if they do, IMHO. I could be wrong, but I don't think that any console manu. released 2 *new* consoles in the same year (and yes, I would consider a portable or handheld system a "console") and had them both succeed. I think even the once mighty Nintendo allowed one X-mas season for the original Gameboy to take off before releasing the SNES, if my memory serves me right.

1080p is awesome, hopefully Bluray movies will be 1080p even if most of us only see them in 1080i. Saruman, I believe this will not come out till next year.

It's important to point out that Xbox 360 only does 1080i but not 1080p. Technically PS3 is the only true, full HD video game system. Nintendo hasn't released what HD resolutions they support yet.

CrabbyappletonYes I agree this is important. Although I cannot see a difference in 720p and 1080i. I am pretty sure I can see the difference when it goes to 1080p - the clarity is impressive. I just wish I could have someone switch back and forth, when I don't know what res I am watching and see if I can tell correctly. I have a feeling I can and it is not in my head.

_chef_1080p... wow! Did anyone know that the only official DVD res for 16:9 is the max res...?!? Funny. 1080p... wow!

Wesley HesterSony has gone above and beyond my wants for their new console on the video side. Hope to hear more about the audio side. Of course with any Blu-ray Hi-Def movies there should be Dolby Digital Plus and/or DTS-HD and "lower flavors". Now I hope that developers are encouraged to use HD resolutions and surround sound and that it isn't as optional or absent as it is on the PS2. I like Microsoft's approach of requiring 720p and Dolby Digital in all games. If you've seen my posts before you alreay know I'll be getting both consoles and the Revolution too so comparisons between the consoles is just laughable to me personally and I truely hope they all do well.

"The Sony hype machine in full swing now. How many people will fall for it this time?" Sounds like the fanboy hate machine is in full swing. Nobody is falling for that. Seriously that is an impressive spec that cant really be hated on. From what I have heard this is its native rez also. Better start saving for a good TV.

Sony obviously fooled you with that rendered Killzone 2 showing, lol. They make a killing off of people like you who don't know the difference between a good product and a bad one.

sorti1080p is crazy '“ might be a good time to buy a HDTV that can do 1080p '“ so that must mean that the Sony machine is HDMI? Can DVI even do 1080p? Microsoft is pure evil; I don't want them owning the game business like they own the computer business. When a game developer submits a game to Microsoft they also have to submit design docs. Microsoft is also a competitor there is no reason to share that inside info with a competitor. If Microsoft wins this battle I wonder how they will stifle the game business more. Not saying Sony is nice but Microsoft is evil! Oh well I'll just end up buying the Nintendo machine anyway and playing whatever Mario & Zelda games they put out at whatever rez they happen to be at.
