Plextor Europe adds hard disk products to product portfolio

Plextor has send out a press release in which it announces that it expands its product line with hard disk. Plextor is widely known as manufacturer of optical storage products and uses the slogan 'King of quality'. The company now aims to become a content management and converting provider with its flash memory, optical storage, digital video converts and now with is hard drive models.

Plextor Portable HDD

The growth of digital media such as video, audio and pictures is driving the demand for portable storage devices. Plextor has provided the ideal solution: high capacity, fast USB 2.0, highly portable bus powered hard disks, that require no separate power supply. They are available in two sizes, the PX-PH04U is 40GB and the PX-PH08U is 80GB and both come with a useful write protection switch.

Professional Network HDD

Plextor has overcome the problem of small business networks requiring extra storage and back-up: a convenient 250GB Network Attached Storage (NAS) device that comes equipped with extra features. As well as providing instant shared storage across the network, the PX-EH25L includes: a print server that can share a printer over the network when connected to it via USB; and an automated backup scheduler from the NAS to a USB connected external HDD of the same capacity. Additionally, the Professional Network HDD is both secure and flexible: it includes a high security feature so that the administrator can limit access to certain folders; and it can be configured as a dedicated FTP server.

The company hopes that consumers and companies will associate these products with the reliability and quality that the company is aiming to offer in its optical storage products. Besides these products the company has also announced a portable floppy drive. The hard disk solutions are, according to the press release, in cooperation with I/O Data.

So Plextor history 101... Late 90s... Plextor makes unquestionably the best CD writers on the market. Early 2000... DVD comes out and instead of Plextor trying to dominate the DVD market, they rebadge NEC drives. 2005... Plextor attempts to dilute themselves and jumps into the Hard Drive market (with rebadged drives I'm sure). And now Plextor's future 101... any smart consumer doesn't buy Plextor DVD writers nor Plextor HDs and instead choose a new company that offers superior quality(ex: ?), or superior value at the price (ex: LiteOn)
