Plextor introduces fastest DVD dual-layer recording for PX-716

Plextor looks to be finally listening to their customers with requests for faster DVD recording, especially with dual layer media.  Now they are offering new firmware (v1.04) from mid January for their Plextor PX-716 series that improves the writing speed of DVD+R DL to 6x, DVD-R DL to 2x and DVD+RW to 8x.

Beginning March they expect to release another firmware update (v1.05) to improve DVD-R DL support to 6x.  This announcement comes just a few days following Pioneer's 6x DVD±R DL drive announcement.   Thanks to Stefan Duvander for E-mailing in the following press release:

Plextor introduces fastest Double Layer drive with writing speeds up to 6x DVD+R DL and 6x DVD-R DL

Free of charge, Plextor offers for its award winning Dual Layer drive, the PX-716 series, a firmware upgrade to support higher writing speeds.

By this upgrade Plextor offers its customers protection on their investment for the future. They are the first to introduce to the market 6x DVD+R DL and 6x DVD-R
DL writing. Besides an increase of the Double/Dual layer speeds, 8x writing on DVD+RW media is supported, and additional support for 16x writing on DVD +/-R is
added.

Middle of January, firmware 1.04 will be released to support:

  • 2x(CLV) writing on DVD-R DL media
  • 6x(CLV) writing on DVD+R DL media
  • 8x writing on DVD+RW media
  • Support additional 16x media

Beginning of March, firmware 1.05 will be released to support:

  • 6x(CLV) writing on DVD-R DL media

This press release is also available on the Plextor web site at http://www.mta.co.jp/product/product.html

It is nice to see Plextor back in the lead for fast DVD recording speeds.  Not long ago consumers were getting anxious for them to even add dual-layer support and now they add support to the PX-716 series to make them inline with the fastest dual-layer recorders on the market.

tylauThe cost of a 5 pack media that can support such speed in DL seems to be higher than the whole drive, LOL.

SeánIt looks like DVD Dual-layer suffers from the printer syndrome where a set of replacement cartridges can cost more than the printer itself. Dell were the only one I knew of that had a printer offer (with cartridges) cheaper than the price of one individual replacement cartridge. Stick Out Tongue For the time being I'm sticking with my current DVD recorder until dual-layer pricing comes down since by that time there will likely be higher spec recorders again. Wink
