GristyMcFisty and TimBee both used our news submit to tell us that yesterday pop superstar Michael Jackson came out against a proposed new law that would put music pirates in jail. Although Jackson admits that stealing music off the Internet is wrong, putting file-swappers in jail is 'absolutely inappropriate':
The self-styled "King of Pop" feels that, while he would like to see the practice of stealing music off the Internet stamped out, the legislation against the downloading of copyrighted material was too harsh.
"I am speechless about the idea of putting music fans -- mostly teenagers -- in jail for downloading music," he said in a statement from his Neverland Ranch in the western state of California. "It is wrong to illegally download, but the answer cannot be jail. Here in America we create new opportunities out of adversity, not punitive laws, and we should look to new technologies ... for solutions. "This way, innovation continues to be the hallmark of America. It is the fans that drive the success of the music business," the "Gloved One" said.
Jackson's spokesman in Los Angeles said the 44-year-old singer felt that lawmakers are tackling the problem in the wrong way in the proposed law.

Zix please grow up. He is trying to help..... The only ones that know for sure if He is gulity of child molestation is God and Michael Jackson. Don't be so quick to judge...... Judge not least yea be judged......
And as there is no such thing as god (or Santa, the tooth fairy etc.) which you should have also have grown out of by now?
the only people who know what Wako does is him and his (alleged) victims
Personally, I would like to thank Micheal Jackson for speaking out and frankly making some good sense. To be so talented and yet sensitive to his fans is a rare combination. Long Live Michael Jackson.
He may also be embarrassed at the fact that the RIAA is using his music along with just a handful of other artists to bust people. Forcing him to make a statement.
"I think this is just a desperate attempt to regain some popularity."
Whatever his motivation is... if that's what it takes to change a law, or to review the penalties for downloading a song, it's only a song people! Not plutonium or smth... by all means, let him be... he has my support.
He is the first BIG artist to make a statement about this matter in public.
It may not change anything atm, but I think it's very important that this happened.
I used to be a BIG regular on this site but dont come as much these days.
All I have to say is a LOT of you need to grow up and get over it.
You freak out that the RIAA presumes your all guilty without actually taking you to court and proving it and how your innocent till proven guilty, yet here you all are whining and complaining when a BIG name celebrity comes out and actually agree's with you and stands up.
No wonder the RIAA has so much power, you all just whine and bitch and slagg off people who actually agree with you.
If this is the reaction he gets for coming out and sticking up for people's rights then where is the motivation for any other celebrity to put their neck on the line and go up against the RIAA by speaking against them??
If you want to judge him as a child molester when you have NO idea but simply read one or two newspapers or saw a bit of TV then fine - your all a bunch of thieves and are guilty - as much so as him.
Look up the word hypocritical and you'll see yourselves then - either people are innocent until proven guilty or they're not.
The fact that he's a big celebrity and newspapers can sell a lot more copies by accusing him of being a child molester is irrelivant to the fact he deserves a trial as much as anyone else.
I think it's great he's speaking against the RIAA's decisions. I hope more big names do too.
But it doesn't mean I'm going to be naive and not think he probably has an ulterior motive. He's been on the VERY successful side of copyright ownership back when he purchased all the Beatle's copyrights.
Well said. Personally I'm not a great fan of his music but millions are and even after all that has been said about him in the media he still has millions of fans.
I don't think this is a popularity thing at all, after all he can lock himself away in his mansion / theme park / whatever it is and not give a rats arse about what goes on in the real world, but with him making a statement like this a lot of people will sit up and take notice, and his comments could keep some people from going to jail as it's an amission that he personally feels that people sould not get sued for copying his stuff. With the right lawers and a fair judge it could tip the scales against any lawsuit.
You make a lot of lot of sense and I certainly couldn't have said it better! Hypocrisy is the right word for those here who are taking cowardly stabs at Jackson for publicly making such a statement. I certainly don't believe they would do such a thing if they were in his position, they'd be too busy helping the RIAA to protect their music!!
I never liked Jackson but I liked Black or White. I also like this statement and hope others will speak out against the RIAA and BPI. RIAA + BPI = PARASITES!
And as there is no such thing as god (or Santa, the tooth fairy etc.) which you should have also have grown out of by now
Who the hell are you to say that? People like you should learn to respec others opinions; not trample them. Go back in your hole.
Grow up bitches! The issue here is not child molestation! I am a cynic sure but I believe Michael Jackson is speaking from his conscience here. Obviously the consumer can use all the help he can get from an out of control big business and us govt in bed with each other... So we should be praising Michael Jackson for this. Such rage and hate should be reserved to rich assholes like Lars Ulrich from Metallica who became the poster boy for the RIAA. An individual who got famous on the underground tape traders in the early 80's to get a record contract. So piracy suited him when he needed the fans but not later when he didn't need them! Smell the coffee beans!!!!
Yea Right jacko.....frankly you would get more publicity dangling your little one from the top of the empire state building.....
let me state this to all you MJ fans..I love the music despise the man.....when I see MJ , I think of all the separated fathers who do not have the dollars for lawyers so they can have their children..........
Hey Sherrif, if you love the music and the statement he made against the RIAA then that's all that needs to said, it looks like most here aren't interested in the rest of your comments!!!!
I agree with Zix from the beginning, Jacko is depressed because he can't have sex with them. But, I also think he wants more publicity so people will download his music. Sure, he was an alright singer about 10 years a go, but now he is just a freak. For Christ's sake, who names their kid Blanket? Will he have another one named Comferter or Towel? And I STILL got just two word for the RIAA...........grtz.
Hey, against the RIAA I will even take O.J Simpson and all others that have been accused of anything to take a stand. Shiet I would even have Nixon to take down the RIAA. Right now the RIAA is a giant that is putting barriers that are UNREASONABLE and DUMBFOUNDED, for their stupidity.
ok, so far we have established there is no god, there is no santa, MJ has "sold all his copyrights", MJ is a fruitcake, MJ is crazy coz he nicknames his baby Blanket, MJ is a publicity seeker that would rather do children outside of jail than in jail and so on and so on. Didn't know so many of you moonlighted as tabloid journalists ! Refreshing stuff.
I still support MJ regardless of his motives and I hope there is a huge swell of support against the RIAA's insanity. We need more artists like this speaking out.
Sherrif,
I hope for your sake you never end up in front of a Jury of people like you. You've tried and convicted him with NO proof and wont shut the hell up about it.
There was a TV documentary about MC recently on TV in england, it made him look really bad - a week later someone got hold of the original interview tapes and released those - it TOTALLY changed how he looked - the first broadcast had taken things out of context, not shown things where he was being totally normal and just showing any 'wierd' bits.
The original was just a hack job to get good ratings. MOST newspapers do the exact same thing every time - no one wants to read how MJ likes kids and is just a nice guy - you sell 1000's more copies by acusing him of being a child molester.
YOU dont know one way or the other so shut up and grow up. If you know he did it then take him to court and make him pay for it with all this proof you have - if you dont know then shut the f*ck up.
For clawso1 and nila...read my post again...or are your eyes painted on.......
I never mentioned I was for what he said about the RIAA and frankly don't give a rats arse...I guess Myself and umpteen other million people imagined he dangled his child over the balcony...I love healthy debate...but hey, if you two dickylickers are going to skin me at least learn to read...
MJ is in enough financial trouble over broken contracts to try and gain popularity through any channel he can.....most of the more mature CDfreakers will (I daresay) vote with their feet (and wallets) on issues like this...Call me a cynic but I tend to believe, like politicians, music and film stars are only motivated by two things, populism and greed. Their lives are ruled by the media and their managers...if this was NOT the case and I am a lying BASTARD...then human ,land, flora and fauna welfare groups would be much the richer for the contributions of these outspoken stars.....er but they aint ..are they ???.......X: [edited by Sherrif on 23.07.2003 17:34]
If anyone has ever used logic or taken philosophy, then some easily realized by now the "Ad Hominem" at play. Attacking the man - when the issue at hand is people being arrested for digital music content. This is an old scare tactic used by the (higher) corporate players (lobbyists?). If anyone has been following their actions, then you should know already that the LAW is BENT by MONEY.
Just because a man tells you an opinion - does not mean the man's opinion should be ignored for the sake of hate.
For the "god does not exist" d00d - you are either joking or are a plain atheist... however, proof is lacking to both support and negate the existence of such a being.
Keep your minds open...
Sherrif if you are a father, God Bless the kids you have, cause they'll need it!!! And since you like/love the music and don't download any, why are you posting here, just keep on purchasing your like/love music! most of the people here are downloading music mostly.
