Popularity of DVD movie rentals holding steady in U.S.
GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that DVD movie rentals are still doing well, even in the face of lower prices and video on demand competitors. Seems like folks still like to browse the shelves and take it home for a night or two.

Complementing the incredible growth in sales of DVDs and despite the challenges from competing technologies such as video-on-demand, video rental remains the American public's favorite way to view new release movies, Bo Andersen, president of the Video Software Dealers Association, said today. Andersen noted that the total number of DVDs and VHS cassettes rented in 2003 will be approximately the same as in 2002."Rather than seeing a flat video rental market as a sign of weakness, we see it as a sign of extraordinary strength," Andersen said. "With DVDs offered for purchase at remarkably attractive prices and cable and satellite companies aggressively promoting video-on-demand, one would expect pundits to speculate that the rental market would see a dramatic drop. But, in fact, that drop has not happened."

Well, I like to buy some DVD's that I think are classics such as "Pirates of the Caribbean" to add to a collection that I am building. Plus, I have seen some nice deals in the paper for DVD's when purchased in sets of three or four at about 9 or 10 bucks each. However, it is possible to go down and rent a DVD movie for 1 dollar from the local drugstore! So I can see where if the price is right, renting will continue to be a popular method of seeing a movie. Especially for those of us on a budget.

At least in my area of the US VOD is not a factor. With Time Warner charging REDICULOUS amount of money(~ 80USD/mo.) just to get a basic digital cable package (with about 2 channels you might find useful over the non digital but still costly basic cable package) it\'s not even an attractive offer. Not to mention the quite limited selection of VOD movies that they offer at least in my area. That reminds me time to lose this cable. I'm sick of TW raising rates and adding like "Home and garden channel" (WTF?) to justify the added cost

Hypnosis4U2NVOn that note, why does a hardlined home phone cost half as much as a cellular phone without making calls on the home phone and using your cellular for all of your calling needs, including long distance?
