Want to fit 800MB onto 80 minute CD-R media for ANY data? Well a bunch of people are working on a new CD writing format which enables you to do so. Already a small program allows you to write this amount of data onto CD-R's. Called MCFMaker (After the MCF format for containing video and audio files which is to be a replacement for the old MS AVI format) it does not use any overburning techniques but a combination of mode 1 and mode 2 CD writing seen used on VCD and SVCD's.

Because it does not have as much error protection as a normal CD-R writing mode it's main use will probably be for MPEG4 type video variants like OGM because the OGM container (Which is a combination of DiVX video and OGG audio) has inbuilt error protection techniques. At the moment the only way to read back the data however is using the included conversion tool which means copying the data back to hard disk before you can access it. But others are working hard on a DirectShow filter or driver which will allow direct access to the CD data on the fly. Because of the extra 100MB that would be available this would allow an increase in quality for MPEG4 variant video and audio. Standardisation of this new reading and writing format is another issue.
