GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that Roxio has posted a first quarter loss and
is expecting to make a bigger loss in the seoond quarter. Amongst CD Freaks
visitors the company is best known for its Easy CD/DVD Creator software, but the
company has many other software packages.
Roxio's chairman and chief
executive Chris Gorog was upbeat on the call, referring to Napster as the
"biggest brand in online music." Roxio bought the assets of
Napster last year for about $5 million at bankruptcy auction and bought
the Pressplay music service this year. "We don't feel that we
have to do a dollar for dollar spend against other entrants in the market.
The brand itself is giving us an awesome amount of penetration into the
consumer marketplace," he told analysts on a conference call.
The company has recently also
purchased the assets of file sharing pioneer Napster and is hoping to launch a
new legal music download service by this name. All investments have created
current losses, but the company is confident it will be able to make profits
again soon.
The
company is under profit pressure in its core business of software sales
and is spending heavily to try to launch Napster, and there are uncertain
economics in that business," said Steven Frankel, analyst with Adams
Harkness. "Their guidance is worse than expected and is causing
me to lower my estimates for the second quarter," he said.
It seems that Roxio has changed its core business from recording software
to music downloads. This is certainly a big market, but one that is getting more
crowded by the day. On the recording software market Nero is in a dominant
position and there does not seem to be much competition.
Recently Intervideo,
best known for its DVD playing software has said it will introduce an authoring
package, and also Sonic has a wide range of CD and DVD creation
products.
