SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 adapter reviewed @DragonSteelMods
An interesting piece of hardware was reviewed at DragonSteelMods. It is an adapter that can take a hard drive, be it 2.5”, 3.5” or SATA or even an optical drive and make it into a USB device.

Besides the ability to connect any interface to an USB port, another really appealing feature of this "universal" adapter is the price: $33.99 (about €25).

Installation is very easy, because it requires only three simple steps: plug the adapter into your hard drive, plug the power connector in and then the USB connector to your computer.

The main drawback of this adapter is the speed, but this is not a surprise because the USB port is not the fastest connection available. In reviewer's test, the average read rate is around 32MB/s, different brand of hard disk will have a little bit difference, but it should be minimal.

I bought one of these off eBay from a seller in Hong Kong for around £10/$20 delivered. Worth every penny.

Looks useful for the most part, short of one glaring exception: How do you plug in the SATA power cable for those drives that don't have a 4-pin Molex? Embarrassment There doesn't look to be enough room for those side-by-side SATA ports. cry

This is GARBAGE and not worth a dime - FOr starters the chipset used is CRAP - USB 2.0 should easily support way more than 32MB/s, say 50MB. Will not work in DMA mode with DVD writers or DVD ROMs, be warned, if you use your DVD Writer it will run in PIO mode 4 !

I have had one of these for about six months came wth a molex to sata power adapter to answer the poster above. The PsU supplied was a bit weak but works fine for recovering stuff off old systems but I would not even think about using one for regular use
