Samsung electronics, a well known brand for digital consumer electronics has just announced its new premium Spinpoint MP2 2.5" 7200rpm 250GB hard disk, which consists of two 125GB platters.  The 7200rpm spindle gives a significant performance improvement over typical 5400rpm laptop hard drives, bringing both the performance and capacity to that more typical of desktop PCs.  Besides laptop and tablet PCs, this 2.5" drive would also be ideal for use in ultra compact media center PCs, slim form factor desktop PCs and entry-level blade servers which use 2.5" hard drives. 

This Samsung Spinpoint MP2 also features an SATA II 3.0Gbps interface, a 16MB buffer and Native Command Queuing.  Its proprietary SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies aim to provide ultra silent operation.  To protect against accidental drops, an optional Free Fall Sensor is available for the drives.

The Samsung MP2 will be available in capacities of 80GB to 250GB and will start shipping to key OEM manufacturers from March 2008.  No pricing information has been announced at this time.
