The Sony Corporation has said today that shipments of its PlayStation 2 game console have topped no less than 50 million pieces. Thanks to a great holiday shopping season the PlayStation 2 shipments stood at 50.03 million units as of yesterday:
The sales mark was achieved 14 months earlier than the original PlayStation and confirms Sony's dominance in the home videogame market, with PlayStation 2 far out-selling Nintendo's GameCube and Microsoft's Xbox.
PlayStation has become a key profit generator for Sony, the world's largest consumer electronics maker, as it toils along with other Japanese electronics giants to emerge from a slump that hit the high-tech sector two years ago. |
Sony has also said the number of software titles targeted for PlayStation 2 has exceeded 1,500 and shipments of those games have topped 300 million worldwide. Read the complete article here.Source: Yahoo!Finance

hard to pick who to hate the most these days, Microdogs or sony arsholes as they both promise the world and deliever rebadge shit.
You're wrong spc
Sony is the better solution in audio, video, and everything high-tec related, almost always. Very few exceptions.

actually shadowblaster, sony ships out as many lemons as most technology companies out there. and especially when you consider the ps2, which is what spc was refering to. the ps2 is plagued with buggy dvd support amongst other problems I won't get into. so yeah, sony's is not a better solution, but rather the same as any.
Right, nothing beats a good Sony cd-writer for example!
(Oh no wait, just about any writer beats a Sony writer! :4)

I, too, am convinced that Sony can no longer build anything worth buying except for maybe TV's or monitors.
It is true, Sony does build, quite possibly, the worst CD-Writers known to man. That's why their newer ones are really re-labeled Lite-On's (I think...I read that somewhere).
Although, Microsoft is mighty bad in that (among other reasons) the X-Box only has a 90 day warranty, beyond which period it's $100 to fix it.
I never see any broken GameCubes...

I don't know about anyone else, but I choose a system based on the games that are out for it.
Metroid sold me on the gamecube, but I think the XBox has the best hardware.
Doc is right Nintendo stuff hardly has any problems. I have NES, SNES and N64. All three still working.
And I have to agree with JAB1981 regrading dvd playback. Some of my DVDs do not play on PS2 but will play on other DVD players.

Let's not forget that "shipping" and "sold" are two entirely different things, not to mention PS2 returns count as a shipment (for the replacement).
Even ignoring these facts, I never pay attention to stats about a product from the company that makes it.
Well, but Sony's productions are not limited to PS2 and burners. I agree with all of you: Sony burners suck
. And I think PS2 is a great system... with many many bugs, and the XBOX is much more powerful. But talking about TVs, Hi-Fi's, Monitors, Home Theather's, DVD Players, and many devices like Walkmans, CD Walmkmans, MP3 Players, Headphones and so on.... you cannot say that Sony is not the best building all those stuff right? :4
But look, make a comparison, and the most of the Sony products are among other company's products.
No one can deny that the best TV tech out there is still Trinitron... and about sound systems, nothing beats a Genezi. And what about breaktrough thechnologies developed by Sony? like G-Protection, the old (but the first) MegaBass, and DRC.
