Sony announces PlayTV
According to a news published at Ars Technica, Sony announces PlayTV, a combination TV tuner and DVR for the PlayStation 3, available for European market only. The reason for being available in Europe only is that US uses ATSC, which Sony is choosing not to support at the present time.

PlayTV features two high-definition tuners and the ability to record television shows; recorded videos can then be played on the PS3, and according to David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, it is intended to make the PS3 "the best choice of home entertainment hub for the whole family."

heffequeI guess it will support both MPEG-2 and h.264 DTT emitions, right?

Not from what I read, Initially only H264. Mpeg2 seems to be falling out of favor as a HD transmission standrard. More capacity on Mpeg4..

heffequeThe thing is that as of today, most DTT emitions are made in MPEG-2, and some stations are changing slowly twards h.264 so... I'm not sure that h.264-only support is such a good idea.

SciFerWell PS3 better wake up and smell the money! ATSC and the USA is where its at, if they choose to ignore this market they will end up losing a lot of potential sales. P.S. If they really want to capture this "Whole Living Room" Experience they need to get on the ball, timming is everything and if XBox 360 rolls out with their version first then PS3 will lose some market share, that is if PS3 cares about the US market. Some Random Guy"ATSC and the USA is where its at, if they choose to ignore this market they will end up losing a lot of potential sales." - I'll second that. "Pray (Play) TV looks like pay TV to me; it's just a curse on the human race." - Pete Townshend

heffequeMost people in Europe only have over the air TV. A lot of people in the US have paid TV (cable, satellite, etc). Sony isn't missing out on so much by not supporting ATSC.
