Sony introduces BD Live titles on April 8th

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that it will target April 8 as the date it will release its first list of Blu-ray Disc titles that can be connected to the Internet for bonus materials. Two new movies, The Dewex Cox Story and The 6th Day, are the studio's first two BD-Live titles. A new software update for Sony's Playstation 3 makes the game console the first Blu-ray Player to have Internet connectivity...

In the end all future Blu-ray players are expected to be 'Profile 2.0', but when the format was launched Sony said 'Profile 1.0' was enough. Players couldn't offer the picture-in-picture feature and couldn't be connected to the Internet. Blu-ray's rival, HD DVD, offered all of this from the start. Last October Blu-ray supporters decided that picture-in-picture was the minimum a player should have, so 'Profile 1.1' was born.

With the 8th of April being the date that the first BD-Live supported discs will be introduced, many think that more 2.0 players will be introduced in the upcoming months. The one and only Internet-connected Blu-ray player, the Playstation 3, is updated today. If you turn on you PS3 you will be greeted by the newest system software update, v2.20. This update adds support for the format's BD-Live technology and should give you the chance to use BD-Live on the 8th of April.

My exact birthday is on the 9th of April, but I think I will pass on any presents concerning Blu-ray at this point. Maybe in 2010, it feels saver to wait another year.
