Vinculum used our newssubmit to tell us that a new cd-rw had been introduced by sony. It has a capacity of 1.3 Gigabyte.
Sony Core Technology & Network Company Europe (CNCE) has announced the introduction of the "Double Density CD-R/RW" products with 1.3GB capacity, which is double the capacity of conventional CD-R/RW media , from April 2001. The World's first Double Density CD-R/RW drive (CRX200E-RP), as well as the corresponding high speed CD-Recordable (CDQ-13G1: 12x write speed) and CD-ReWritable (CD-RW13G1: 8x write speed) media, offer state of the art optical recording technology and maintain the same features that have made conventional CD-Rs and CD-RWs so popular in the past. The target market of CRX-200E-RP is 5% of high-end CD-R/RW after market, which is estimated approximately 17 million units world wide at the initial stage.
In order to double the capacity, physical track pitch and minimum pit length are miniaturized. By strengthening the error correction scheme (CIRC7), the effect of scratches and dust is minimized. The remaining areas inherit the basic specifications of the conventional CD-ROM/R/RW formats to make use of the existing CD-ROM/R/RW infrastructure.
Personally I think it won't be a big break, because you'll need another writer to be able to use these cd's. If I had to choose between these cd's and dvd, I'd surely go for dvd.

yes, but such recoder (dd cd) will be sooner available and payable then a decent dvd-r(w) (4.9gb standard) then I'd rather prefer this one instead of waiting 3 more years for a dvd-r(w) and another point, every one has a cdplayer (cars, home,pc, etc) so when this 1.3gb cd is compatbible with all this why boterhing about a expensive dvd ? these dd cdrecorders are fast(12x),big, and compatible with current cd standards ! I do not have a dvdaudio-player in my car do you ?
Reading that, I don't get a warm and fuzzy about compatability.
Does it really say that the 1.3gb cds will be read by our existing CD Rom drives?? ie, my CD Car stereo??
Yes they are compatible. The data on these disks is just more pushed together. Proper drives should be able to read this when they comply with the standards
