Sony joins European Net music giveaway - Digital Download Day

Next Wednesday should be remembered as Digital Download Day. This initiative of OD2 a company co-founded by artist Peter Gabriel has found the major record labels in a deal to distribute songs from all five major record labels. At digital download day users are allowed to download up to 3 albums of legally bought music worth about USD 5.33. Also Sony is now involved and brings in artists such as Michael Jackson and Shakira.

OD2 has enabled a host of Web partners including Microsoft's MSN and Tiscali to operate subscription download services on behalf of music companies. The labels this week will bring back Digital Download Day, a promotion that generated tremendous publicity in Britain last fall, extending it this time to France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and Britain.

From Wednesday through April 15, consumers can register on www.digitaldownloadday.com for a $5.33 credit enabling them to download or listen to up to three albums' worth of free tracks. The freebie, organizers say, hopes to raise consumer awareness of the major labels' new offerings.

It is a good initiative, and i hear it's also being supported by kazaa and edonkey... However, they are offering up to 3 million albums worth of tracks for free every day of the week! LOL
