Sony shows 0,3mm thin 11" OLED screens

Some of you might already heard about the future of TV screens, OLED. OLED is the abbrevation of organic light-emitting diode and has some big advantages over LCD/Plasma screens. OLED screens do not require backlight, like LCD screens and therefore consume less electricty and can be flatter, and due better manufacturing processes, an OLED screen should be cheaper to produce.

Now Impress reports that Sony has displayed some new OLED prototypes at the Display 2008 exhibition in Tokio. Amongst the showcased prototypes were a 3,5" screen of 0,2 milimeter and a 11" screen of 0,3milimeter.

Resolution of the 3,5" screen is 320x220pixels and the 11" one has a resolution of 960x540 pixels.

The 11" OLED screen is already a big improvement over the XEL-1 TV that Sony is planning to release this year in Europa. Considering the 0,3 mm of the new development this TV is huge with its 3mm (10x more) thickness, altough this includes the entire TV, not just the screen.

OLED is a technology to keep an eye on and is already used for small screen devices, expect is that it will replace LCD/Plasma TV's the coming years.

I have , IT blows away any thing by comparison, it almost looks 3-d. the colors are so true and the edges are extremly crisp.yes it's as thin as 4 dvd discs stacked one on the other( with out the cases), But at $2000 or there abouts for a 11" screen, I'll wait for the prices to come down alittle first.
