Sony to slash price for PS3 to $450 dollars in Japan?

SiC used our news submit to tell us: "Translated by Babel Fish, the site is in Japanese but basically they are saying that the price of the lower end model of the PS3 will be 49980 yen, which is roughly about $450 US. They will also include a HDMI 1.3 connection on this model."

Corporation SONY computer entertainment (SCEI), next generation computer entertainment system "place t Shaun 3" (PS3) HDMI * (Ver1.3 Deep Color correspondence) standard we load the output terminal in HDD20GB.

In addition, desired retail price 49 and 980 Yen (including tax) we set the Japanese domestic price of the same type. Announcing the specification of PS3 2005 May E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) in, from the fact that later, flat display of the full HD correspondence which loads HDMI is thrown by the market accelerating, high picture quality image and the appearance impression due to HDMI the demand for the digital sound which overflows exceeding expectation, has increased, we decided that standard it loads HDMI in the PS3 all type.

The software manufacturer each company way while receiving the cooperation, it starts propelling SCEI, at a stroke with the attractive only of PS3 and advancing the development of original title powerfully, PS3 as an entertainment platform of the next generation

Ouch! Maybe one of our visitors that speaks Japanese can give us a better translation. Looks like they are talking about the model with the 20 gigabyte hard disc drive. At any rate, this is interesting news indeed! Especially, if we could expect to see these prices in other countries as well. Originally, we all thought the PS3 would be more like $500-$600 US depending on the hard disc etc., and even at those prices, Sony was reportedly taking a huge loss per unit. Time will tell I suppose. If it comes to pass, you would be out of your mind to purchase a Blu-ray player other than the PS3. The present Blu-ray players are ~$1000 US and do not have HDMI 1.3 which really makes it a more future proof device, as it can carry much more audio and video information than the present spec. With the money you save on the PS3, you can buy an HDMI cable! (not included)  ;)

Dr. WhoThis is starting to sound good if true. I now wish that they lower the low end model to 400.00 and the high end model to 500.00 yes that is still high but with all the specs about each I feel is a decent reasonable price that the average joe woud pay. However due to this blue ray drive I highly doubt it will happen though.

Remember when the PS2 came out and many people said it would be a good alternative to DVD player replacement? Well the PS2 drives didn't last very long when playing DVD's and games on them. My question is, will the PS3 suffer the same fate as the PS2? I just have a gut feeling that it will suffer the same fate.

>>>> They will also include a HDMI 1.3 connection on this model. <<<< Interesting development. Considering the PS3 should be available in the US and Japan in a matter of weeks it seems quite 'late' to make this sort of announcement. Unless of course we are looking at another delay. ...which would dovetail into the price reduction. Given that Europe may be waiting sometime longer than expected (maybe Winter 2007 if we have another delay) and US/Japanese shipments won't get into full gear until next gear then production costs will have plummeted. Perhaps this was Sony's plan all along?

Crabbyappleton"Perhaps this was Sony's plan all along?" You think they had a plan? clown

Never mind, I already see a thousand dead PS3 in a few weeks after the release date. (by the way, when will it be released ? Sometime in 2010 or what, if we look at $ony's usual delays...puke) Then $ony will own once again. cool

Well they do have about a billion or so available for subsidies, from the sale of BMG to Vivendi in France(the Lithium Ion battery debacle/recall will cost them close to a billion after the smoke from the assorted fires clears so as to speak)! Still, it is a mark of desperation !, given the limited games selection available for launch, and none appear too cutting edge presently! Question , could this be SONY's last ditch rearguard effort, to stem the final homeland invasion by M$?, and it's continuing sea of losses incurred by it's entertainment and electronics divisions? Oh well, at least time is not on their side this time around!loveit

CrabbyappletonGood point heystoopid. But, how would you like to be in the business of making, selling Blu-ray players for 1000 dollars a pop? The only thing those people can do now is sell set top Blu-ray recorders. devil

GezusKWhat's the big deal about HDMI 1.3? It allows more data to be carried. That may be important on a TV, but on a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player, it doesn't matter. HDMI 1.1 already has all the bandwidth needed to transfer the contents of Blu-ray and HD-DVD. HDMI 1.3 will only matter when a new data source comes along. That's why it matters to have it on a TV, at least you can still use that when whatever new disc or source comes along. Similar to ATA100 and ATA133. Neither is actually faster than ATA66. Because the source, the hard drives, couldn't actually feed the data any quicker.

btspmOnly one possible hangup for the PS3 as your living room Blu-ray player: how much cooling do you think they will need for that behemoth of a processor? You better have a kick-@$$ 7.1 system if the fan sounds like a turbine at full blast.

Keep trying Sony - now you're changing the pricing of vapourware. You've lost that market too - MS owns it now. Yer done.

they can go even lower....greedy sony wants us to think that ps3 is very cheap at that price point, but i bet sony can still make money from the basic ps3 models at that price point. i think the reason sony did that was NOT because of xbox360, but because of the greater interests in wii in japan. because the price is so high, it is most likely that mid 20s & early 30s are the ones to buy ps3, but they are NOT that interested in at that price point competition is good...even arrogant sony is pushing the price which i haven't see before...most likely that xbox360 & hd-dvd will be priced considerably lower soon btw the lower price tag is japanese market only for now..though it will follow at the euro launch of march 2006

HDMI 1.3 isn't so important as just having an HDMI outptut. For anyone who plans to use the PS3 to play Bluray movies, the HDMI port is needed to ensure that you can still view movies at HD res when the studios start using the Image Constraint Token.

Dolphinius_RexROTFLMAO I think MS needs to come up with a system with more then 2 or 3 games worth playing before they can truly "own" the market. Personally, I think the Wii has a much better chance of dominating this round, simply because of the price point, and the higher good game to bad game ratio we've come to know and expect from Nintendo systems. Not to mention that Nintendo will probably steal MS's #1 game market (FPS) with the help of their new controller, which will make it much easier to play these kind of games. Throw in legacy support for Nintendo's existing library, and all of a sudden you pull the older gamers out of retirement. I'll say this. I know more then a few 50 year olds who want to own Nintendo Wii's, and have no interest in PS3's or XBox 360's. Also, many of my stereotypically non-gamer friends are on board for buying a Nintendo Wii sometime this year, or even on launch day. Again, they have no interest in the rivaling systems.

"I think MS needs to come up with a system with more then 2 or 3 games worth playing before they can truly "own" the market. " Who was first to the console online market? Where is the acknowledged future of gaming? Who now controls that market? Who is slashing prices on products not slated to reach a market - ANY market - for another year? Who continues to announce delays due to "game developement issues" and Blow-Ray nonsense, a product that is rapidly losing industry support? Who had a price so astronomical that it would have had to produce a product that guaranteed multiple orgasms in its buyers to be able to justify the screeching price? 'nuff said. I do concur with your assessment on Wii having a better shot than PS3. It will be the sleeper in the same breath that PS3 will be the all-time bomb of the entertainment market.

Dolphinius_Rex(Quote) Who was first to the console online market? (/Quote) You'll have to remind me, was it Nintendo Japan or was it Sega America, I can't quite remember who pulled it off first. Mind you, it was a lot more difficult back then without the internet :P (Quote) Where is the acknowledged future of gaming? (/Quote) I'm going to go with games that are fun for this question, although I'm sure you were wanting me to say online games. Although MS has done an awesome job with setting up online gaming, I still don't find any of their games worth playing online... except Halo, which was not officially supported last time I checked. (Quote) Who now controls that market? (/Quote) For fun games? I'm going to have to go with Nintendo. For online games, I'll give you MS, but again.... where's the fun? What's the point of games without fun? (Quote) Who is slashing prices on products not slated to reach a market - ANY market - for another year? (/Quote) Umm, you got me on that one.... Nintendo Wii is coming out this year. PS3 is coming out this year. MS's HDDVD player is coming out in Japan this year. I'm a bit stumped sorry. (Quote) Who continues to announce delays due to "game developement issues" and Blow-Ray nonsense, a product that is rapidly losing industry support? (/Quote) That's a very biased question :P Most of the delays have been due to advanced hardware manufacturing problems. Like not being able to make enough PUH's for the PS3's themselves. Game design is not doing so poorly really. Actually, there is some very promising info from SquareEnix, who apparently love having 25-50GB of space to play with (how much longer until Final Fantasy games are just one lone in game movie is another question entirely :P). As for BluRay rapidly losing industry support... I wonder if you're referring to Universal? Who has been a heavy HDDVD support since day one (but actually replicates all their movies at one of the only places in the world that is not Sony, but also replicates BluRay movies... just in case! But no, I wouldn't expect you to know that, since you'd have to have connections to companies you've probably never heard of in the replication industry). Should I remind you that Warner Brothers, Disney, LionsGate, all of Sony/MGM (of course) and pretty much every major studio EXCEPT for Universal is either entirely BluRay ONLY, or equal support for BluRay and HDDVD? (Quote) Who had a price so astronomical that it would have had to produce a product that guaranteed multiple orgasms in its buyers to be able to justify the screeching price?(/Quote) Hrm, I've heard people complain about EVERY console's price. People wanted the XBox 360 to be much cheaper when it came out. People wanted the PS3 to be much cheaper when it came out. Hell, people are still complaining about the Nintendo Wii's price! But if you really look at what you're getting, I think the prices are all pretty fair for all 3 consoles. But no one wants to pay the value of a product anymore, they want to get everything handed to them on a silver platter. Regardless of all the problems each console has. None of it even begins to matter if there are no good games for it. And That is exactly why I will buy a Wii on the first day, and a PS3 next year, hopefully at first price drop.
