Toshiba Samsung to release combo Blu-ray PC drive in March

TechWeb News is reporting that it may not be too long and a Blu-ray PC drive will become available for those early adopters out there. But maybe it would be wise to hold out for the next generation...

The backward-compatible single-layer technology will read CD and DVD formats and is expected to launch in March, according to Richard Aguilera, western regional sales manager for optical disc-drive products at Samsung. "The first technology will burn Blu-Ray, but only read DVD and CD disks," he said.

"The next technology we'll launch," Aguilera said, "will burn all three technologies--Blu-Ray, DVDs and CDs." Samsung's second-generation is scheduled for release between April and August, Aguilera said.

Ouch! That's a pretty big release window for the next model, which would certainly be more desireable. No pricing as of yet either for these new burners. You can read the article at it's source here.

Is it me or is TSST making a Blu-Ray drive kind of ironic?

A Blu-ray drive is one of the most amusing things coming from this joint venture Smilie Personally I'm waiting for a third generation drive that will not play any high-def movies at all (once they realise nobody's buying 'em) and be an unadulterated pure data format for the masses with no Hollywood craptastic 'features'

CrabbyappletonI'm with CB! I like high definition...but I love CSS. Keep buyin them DVDs everybody! Don't let them obsolete the format. devil

They don't tell if you can use your monitor to watch (or even to do your own home movie recordings) BR discs. Will they require monitors with DRM controls to allow HD viewing? If so...

I remember the bickering over the formats, minus R versus plus R media. Sony stepped out with their dual format DRU 500a, , ,maybe Toshiba decided to get the jump on Sony this time! biggrin

toshiba says tsst is "an independent company" funny thing is that tsst japan (mainly controlled by toshiba) is making hd-dvd drives while tsst korea (controlled by samsung) is making bd drives. this means that both samsung & toshiba have bd & hd dvd drives ready which hopefully means that there will be dual bd/hd dvd drive coming out soon Wink
