Toshiba announces SD-R1512, CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive

Toshiba just send us a press release in which they announce a new CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive, model number SD-R1512. The new drive features 48x CD-R recording speeds, 48x CD-ROM read speeds and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds. The drive will be shipped with Ahead's Nero 6 software and will cost US$ 119.

The Toshiba SD-R1512 upgrade kit is now available with the
award-winning Nero software suite, version 6.0.0.28, making CD burning a quick and simple project. The rapid 48x CD burning/16x DVD-ROM speeds allow users to quickly copy and/or access files, photos and music, or watch DVD movies right from their desktop computer. With the new Toshiba kit, systems can be easily upgraded in a few short installation steps. The SD-R1512 also saves valuable computer bay space by supporting both DVD read and CD recordable technologies in one drive.

Specification Outline

  • Model: SD-R1512
  • CD-R: 48x
  • CD-RW: 24x
  • DVD-ROM: 16x
  • CD-ROM: 48x

  • Write: CD-R, CD-RW, High Speed CD-RW, Ultra Speed CD-RW
I personally think the price tag of this combo drive is a little high considering that for US$ 119 you can also buy a DVD recorder (which, of course, can also burn CD-R(W)'s and read DVD's). More information about the Toshiba SD-R1512 can be found here. Feel free to discuss this drive in our Recording Hardware Forum.

Damn, that is one dear combo drive. I live in the UK and that works out to approx 80 odd pound, I can get a Liteon combo here for around 35 pound. I could even buy the NEC 8 speed DVD writer for 72 pound, have Toshiba lost the plot?
