Toshiba's new free-fall save, 200GB HDD

Through a press release Toshiba announced an expansion of their storage portfolio, with a new external USB 2.0 hard disk drive. Toshiba's newest product has a 200GB built-in hard disk and is targeted at both consumers and business professionals. The company believes that the HDD "offers advanced security features" by integrating a fingerprint sensor and password security. The stylish HDD is better known as SecuRed and has a Free Fall Sensor that senses any future free fall, shock or vibration. At that point the SecuRed moves the HDD's head between the platters and braces for impact.

“Along with the rising need of storing professional or personal data, portable back-up solutions are becoming ever more important”, says Marco Perino, General Manager EMEA PC Options, Peripherals and Services Division Toshiba Europe GmbH. Perino thinks that the product's looks, security and damage controls are the HDD's main selling points. “Security is a key aspect when storing important data on external hard drives, and this is why we have paid so much attention to it. The data storage of 200GB paired with state of the art security features packed in a stylish, lightweight, small device makes SecuRed unique in the market,” Perino said in the press release today.

SecuRed will be available in Europe in the second quarter of 2008...
